A heated exchange erupted on the House committee floor Tuesday when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R‑Ga.) spoke out of turn during a Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency hearing, prompting a sharp rebuke from Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D‑N.M.).

Greene began speaking without being recognized, causing a disruption in the proceedings. Stansbury swiftly interjected, calling out the breach of protocol. In response, Greene — who chairs the committee — began pounding her gavel repeatedly.

“I am the chair of this committee,” Greene said.

“You can’t just speak anytime you want, that’s not how it works,” Stansbury said in response. “You can smash your gavel all day.”

Greene continued to speak over others and escalating the tension in the chamber. "Madam chair, calm down," Stansbury said.

The incident briefly halted the session as lawmakers attempted to restore order.

During her remarks at Tuesday's hearing, Greene said Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE ) "has shown how our Government can cost less and deliver more."

"It’s shown how we can turn down the spigot. Its shown we don’t need to spend all the dollars that Congress appropriated for this year," she added.

Greene continued: "DOGE has pioneered what the president calls 'radical transparency' concerning wasteful spending. The DOGE website and individual federal agency sites continually update for public view the specific grants, contracts, leases and other payments that they are flagging for termination."
