'Our message is really good': Dem rep explains how Trump can be beaten by Biden stepping aside

On Thursday night, July 18, the 2024 Republican National Convention concluded with presidential nominee Donald Trump's acceptance speech — which got a scathing critique from Rep. Adam Smith (D-Washington) the next morning on MSNBC.
Trump's rambling speech, the congressman argued, gave Democrats a lot of material to use against him.
But Smith also lamented that President Joe Biden is not the best person to run against Trump, and he urged fellow Democrats to find a replacement who is better equipped to win in November.

Smith told MSNBC's José Díaz-Balart, "We need to have a strong person out there who can deliver our message because, again, our message is really good. We should win this election. Let's put somebody up there who's going to deliver that message strongly so that we can win this election."
The congressman stressed that he wasn't attacking Biden from either a policy standpoint or a mental fitness standpoint but rather, believes he isn't up to the physical demands of a national campaign.
"Look, campaigns are hard," Smith told Díaz-Balart. "I've seen people run for president. I remember Bill Clinton at the end of the '92 campaign or '96 — I can't remember which one — his voice was gone. I mean, they flew him around. He had been on the road. He'd been giving speech after speech, interview after interview all across the country. Look, and I've said this before, and I'll say it again: I think Joe Biden is perfectly capable of being president. Running a campaign in this environment is a whole different thing, OK?"
Smith continued, "It is incredibly demanding in this environment. And that is my point. You know, you're out there giving speech after speech, flying all across the country. I mean, to deliver that message — that is a higher level than doing the job as president…. Joe Biden has served this country incredibly well in multiple positions — in particular, as president. He's a been a great president…. I want his message to get delivered, and we need a different person to deliver it."
