President Donald Trump turned First Lady Melania Trump big moment during a White House ceremony celebrating her women's health initiative she worked on into an awkward exchange.
The moment came as the couple signed the directive in the Rose Garden in front of the cameras, as Melania unveiled a proposal she helped develop to expand research into diseases affecting women.
After signing the document, Trump bragged about his signature, got laughs from his officials and handed a pen to his wife and invited her to add her name before adding a dismissive remark.
“I don't know if her signature means anything,” the president told the crowd, which responded with uncomfortable laughter; then he added, “I think it does,” following the reaction.
Melania took the comment in stride, smiling, and responded, “Yours is the most important.”
The event was intended to showcase the first lady's work as she had met with doctors, federal health officials, and other experts and campaigned to get her husband to sign the initiative.
“Beginning today, we will change the reality of women's health,” Melania said at the event.
She described the announcement as a “transformative moment” for women’s health and called for more research into health conditions that disproportionately affect women, with faster development of treatments and improved access to care.
Trump initially praised his wife's efforts, telling the audience, “Melania works so hard. You wouldn't believe it.”
But the president soon turned the conversation to his favorite topic: renovation, commenting on the Rose Garden's stone patio redesign and describing how women previously damaged their shoes on its wet grass. He then talked about his plans for a new heliport and the planned White House ballroom.
Later, while discussing Melania's involvement in the project, Trump delivered more awkward remarks about his wife.
“You think she's easy? She's not so easy. But she's very smart,” he said.
The executive order instructs the Department of Health and Human Services to set up a Women's Health Division inside the National Institutes of Health and also creates a White House task force to be headed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles.
However, the order does not specify whether there is a new fund for the project.
It also revokes the 2024 executive order that former President Joe Biden signed to promote research into women's health, which is almost identical to this new initiative.
Writing for The Independent, columnist Holly Baxter criticized the administration for presenting the announcement as a breakthrough and said they specifically targeted the rollback of research for women.
“Donald Trump came back into power and began his war on places of higher education. In doing so, he specifically targeted research being done on women’s health. Federal agencies started flagging research grants for the word ‘women’ and then pulling the funding.”
