The fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday, January 7 is drawing a wide range of reactions. While some right-wing media figures are defending the shooting as self-defense, many other people believe the agent used excessive force — from conservative MS NOW host Joe Scarbourgh to liberal economist Paul Krugman, who wrote that "ICE murdered a woman in Minneapolis" on his Substack column.

Former Judge Andrew Napolitano, a right-wing libertarian/conservative legal analyst for Newsmax, believes the ICE agent should face criminal charges. And Minneapolis City Councilman Soren Stevenson, talking to MS NOW's Ana Cabrera, described the shooting as a "murder."

Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem was quick to described Good as a "domestic terrorist." But according to CNN reporter Priscilla Alvarez, many U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials "privately expressed shock" over the agency's reaction to Good's death.

Alvarez, in an article published the day after the shooting, reports, "Multiple current and former Homeland Security officials initially privately questioned the officer's conduct, though cautioned that the preceding events remained unclear and stressed that an investigation was necessary. Only a few hours after the shooting, DHS released a statement calling the incident an 'act of domestic terrorism,' and stated that the ICE officer relied on his training and 'fired defensive shots' at the vehicle, which they argued was trying to 'run over' agents."

The CNN reporter adds, "Videos of the incident show the woman appearing to attempt to drive away, though one video also seems to show the car making contact with an officer before he fired his gun."

Alvarez's colleague at CNN, Edward-Isaac Dovere, highlighted her reporting in a post on X, formerly Twitter — noting that "multiple" DHS officials were offended by the agency's reaction to Good's death.

According to Alvarez, a former DHS official — interviewed on condition of anonymity —told CNN, "I don't recognize my former agency. This is truly heartbreaking."
