Los Angeles, Calif. -- Ascending the steep steps that lead from the street to the scene of her son's murder, 47-year-old Louisa Prudhomme is charged by a Doberman Pinscher. Prudhomme reaches over a gate and gives the guard dog a rough pat on the head.

"Sam doesn't seem to remember me," she says.

What Prudhomme will never forget is that just past the snarling Doberman is the apartment on a hill where six years ago her 21-year-old son Anthony was shot in the face with a .25-caliber semi-automatic while lying on a futon she had purchased for him from IKEA. He died wearing a shirt that read, "Keep the Peace."

Anthony Prudhomme was slain by members of the Avenues, a Latino street gang. But he was not a rival gang member, or a police informant, or a drug dealer. The Avenues did not target him for the content of his character, or even the contents of his apartment.

They targeted him for the color of his skin.

Prudhomme was murdered because he identified himself as black (he was in fact mixed-race) in a neighborhood occupied by one of the many Latino street gangs in Los Angeles County. Incredibly, even though these gangs are fundamentally criminal enterprises interested mainly in money, gang experts inside and outside the government say that they are now engaged in a campaign of "ethnic cleansing" -- racial terror that is directed solely at African Americans.

"The way I hear these knuckleheads tell it, they don't want their neighborhoods infested with blacks, as if it's an infestation," says respected Los Angeles gang expert Tony Rafael, who interviewed several Latino street gang leaders for an upcoming book on the Mexican Mafia, the dominant Latino gang in Southern California. "It's pure racial animosity that manifests itself in a policy of a major criminal organization."

"There's absolutely no motive absent the color of their skin," adds former Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Michael Camacho. Before he became a judge, in 2003, Camacho successfully prosecuted a Latino gang member for the random shootings of three black men in Pomona, Calif.

"They generally don't like African Americans," Pomona gang unit officer Marcus Perez testified in that case. "If an African American enters their neighborhood, they're likely to be injured or killed."

A comprehensive study of hate crimes in Los Angeles County released by the University of Hawaii in 2000 concluded that while the vast majority of hate crimes nationwide are not committed by members of organized groups, Los Angeles County is a different story. Researchers found that in areas with high concentrations, or "clusters," of hate crimes, the perpetrators were typically members of Latino street gangs who were purposely targeting blacks.

Furthermore, the study found, "There is strong evidence of race-bias hate crimes among gangs in which the major motive is not the defense of territorial boundaries against other gangs, but hatred toward a group defined by racial identification, regardless of any gang-related territorial threat."

Six years later, the racist terror campaign continues.

A pervasive attitude

Anthony Prudhomme presented no threat to the Avenues. Even so, he was murdered two months after he moved into Highland Park, a neighborhood in northeastern Los Angeles that is home to many gang members. "He didn't have anything [to steal]," his mother says. "He had nothing when they broke in. So to shoot him, I'm sure it was a stripe. They get stripes for killing black people."

"Stripes" are a gang-soldier's badges of honor. Latino gang members in Southern California earn them by doing the bidding of their godfathers in the Mexican Mafia, a powerful criminal syndicate based in the California state prison system that controls most Latino street gangs south of Bakersfield.

According to gang experts and law enforcement agents, a longstanding race war between the Mexican Mafia and the Black Guerilla family, a rival African-American prison gang, has generated such intense racial hatred among Mexican Mafia leaders, or shot callers, that they have issued a "green light" on all blacks. A sort of gang-life fatwah, this amounts to a standing authorization for Latino gang members to prove their mettle by terrorizing or even murdering any blacks sighted in a neighborhood claimed by a gang loyal to the Mexican Mafia.

"This attitude is pretty pervasive throughout all the [Latino] gangs," says Tim Brown, a Los Angeles County probation supervisor. "As long as [street] gangs are heavily influenced by the prison gangs, particularly the Mexican Mafia, racism is just part and parcel of why they come into being and why they continue to exist."

Last fall, four members of the Avenues were convicted of federal charges for conspiring to deprive blacks of their civil rights in Highland Park. Three of them were sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole, in late November; a fourth was to be sentenced the following month.

I don't get the gang thing. The baggy pants, the tatoos, the silly walk. And what's with holding the gun sideways?

Next time they break into a store, they should steal a mirror so they can see how ridiculous they look.

Mexican Mafia? Talk about PC gone wild. Every group wants their own mafia now. Better leave it to the Italians; they know how to take care of business...But don't ever ask them about their business.

Thank you...I'm here all week.

I would do some intelligence work in/on the LAPD, CIA, FBI, etc., from a racist view to a racist act most often is the result of some division of government intelligence for the purpose of creating a particular type of situation that solidfies a particular level of power or create a certain type of community destabilization.

Conspiracy yes, because that's what it is -- rise of Klan, White Citizen's Council, John Birch Society, Crack Epidemic, Heroin in the caskets carrying the remains of the fallen from vietnam, we could go on --- at some point either all of us will wake up and step out of this paradigm or we will continue on until we blow up our reality --- and that which caused this existence (and certainly it was not us who initiated our breath) will replace us with some other form of creative existence. You know we (humanity) don't necessarily have to be it -- the cream of the crop, the top of the line, the best that can be done in the realm of creative existence, (even though We create cultures, societies, religions, philosophies, barter/trade/monetary systems, roles, beliefe, etc. that deify US and call at God, etc.) we are not necessarily the cream of the crop and therefore (unless we like the road we are on and the destination we have selected) it would be great if we could participate in mass humility (before it becomes mass humiliation) and change the destination. But then again, perhaps there are more of us who are benefiting than I know and I am just a party spoiler?

peace, if possible (or when possible, is peace possible? which piece of peace, ??).

Ethnic Cleansing?

The gang thing is old news in CA. This article talks about a handful of drive-by's that happened over the course of a decade. Not sure the phenomenon warrants all that Federal thought crimes firepower that the author seems to call for.

I like Mother Prudhomme's attitude which draws a sharp distinction between the murderer of her son and other Latins even gang members.

It surely is a matter of concern that race-based gangs run the CA prison system but that is a failure of local government. If the state were doing its job, proven racist shot-callers of the MM would be in solitary instead of running the joint.

Evocation of the scary demographics on gang involvement in conjunction with thought crimes and ethnic cleansing seems to prepare the way for militarized police actions in immigrant neighborhoods against the 'looming shadow' of terrorism by MM illegal combatants - who, coincidently, are indistinguishable from other Latinos.

Homeland Security money would be better spent addressing the question of what factors create the need for blacks and recent immigrants to gather in gangs for self defense in every American city for the last 150 years.

Seperation is the only answer

Latino which is European culture is laced with an internal hatred towards blacks and has been that way for some time.In countries like Spain,Argentina,Mexico, and El-Salvador these countries have the deepest history of inflecting violence and hatred towards blacks. In Mexico it is still popular to make art depicting blacks in a negative light similar to your Amos and Andy black face type of buffoonery.Even Indians born and raised in Mexico are not looked at as equals not to mention how they treat their small black populace in that country.Even dark skinned Mexicans who posses a higher percentage of Indian blood are discriminated against by lighter skinned Mexicans who have closer ties to Spaniards and their belief system which of-course includes anti-black sentiments.

Mexicans who move to this country carry with them the same values described in the following paragraph therefore it is not unusual hear about the violence that is taking place in certain areas of Los Angeles along with whats going on in jail in relation to the riots being reported from the news agencies.Although drugs and gangs are often affiliated with these reports of black and brown violence, the bigger theme is that race hatred towards blacks is more appropriate for this topic and that some Latinos when given the chance will try to do harm to blacks wither they are affiliated with a gang or if they are regular people going about their business. The incident that took place in Highland Park and Harbor City is nothing new,as matter of fact base on my experience and knowledge of the city places like:San Pedro,Wilmington,Lomita, Pacoima,San Bernidino,San Fernando,Van Nuys,North Hollywood,Canoga Park,Pomona,Azusa and East-LA and many others of the like are places where blacks need to be careful when traveling and living because these are the places where they are more likely to face some type of confrontation with Latinos.

In Los Angeles you have different types of Mexicans that are anti-black,you have the type that are peaceful and hard working but are reserved or non-violent in their dis-like for blacks. But then you have your Neo-Nazi type of Mexican who will when the opportunity arises randomly kill any type of black regardless of where they stand in society. These type of Latinos are supported by the hierarchy of white organized crime syndicates like The Russians,Italians or whoever of these types that control the flow of drugs and guns that make it into the city and into the hands of some of these Mexican gang members with some of the scraps going to blacks gang members. In prison The Mexican Mafia in some cases depending on if various drug deals go sour, often are the protectors of The Aryan Nation which of course is an openly anti-black gang.

According to many surveys, the Majority of Latinos feel they have more in common with whites than any other group. The word Mexican means mix but in some cases especially if they are from places like Guadalajara Mexico they can be considered white. So what the following means is that these anti-black tendencies will definitely show itself sooner or later because of the white blood that flows withen their veins. The Mexican Mafia takes its orders from a hierarchy of whites who are the true controller of the drug trade and in some cases are politician who channel money through fake programs that allow the money to make its way to the Mexican Mafia leaders. This hierarchy can also be any white based mafia type like the Russians or the Italians.

The goal of the hierarchy of whites that control this country is to use Mexicans to cleanse blacks out of the city thus taking the heat off themselves while using Mexicans to do the dirty work and eventually take back the city event it means a race war.

For blacks the only solution to this problem is separation and while it may not realistic now,it will become a forced reality sooner or later.

Gee, do you think just maybe this problem is exacerbated by out-of-control illegal immigration? Mexico has many good qualities, but attitudes toward blacks within Mexico has never been one of them.

All in synch with Bush's campaign to drag us down to Mexico's level, in everything: wages, crime, environmental degradation, race relations, you name it.

and only propaganda. Don't you realise that a 'brown person' of any race or ethnicity can commit no crime because they have been oppressed by whites for centuries? (take your pick- it could be colonialism, crusades, taking Aztan from rightful residents, etc.) So this is a false, racist story. Brown people, especially La Raza, who had their land taken from them by force. Viva La Raza!! It is a shame that black people are a possible victim of the rightful reclaimation but black people were brought here by evil whites and refused to leave and so are responsible for their own predictament now. Viva La Raza!!

So a few blacks are being ethnically cleansed from certain areas of L.A. - what's the problem here? Isn't this in keeping with the general trend of pandering to America's fastest growing ethnic group while tending to ignore one that is seen to be killing itself off in drive-bys, and now, being displaced by a competing(?), ethnic group? I think it's pretty obvious that no one gives a shit about blacks; certainly not politicians anyway. Don't believe me? Take a drive down New Orleans way sometime.

Meanwhile, Alterneters can continue advocating unlimited, illegal immigration as necessary for the *sigh* economic viability of the country while keeping their political correctness intact. They can do so because illegal immigration has nothing to do with this situation, right? You keep telling yourself that while reality marches on . . .

So, continue parroting the same, tired tract about "they're just doing jobs we won't do" and labeling those who disagree with you as racists, xenophobes, etc. Continue ignoring statistics that point to the fact that millions of illegal immigrants are in fact a net drain on the already imperiled economy. Suspend common sense which tells you that workers willing to undercut the pay scale (and to be fair - companies willing to engage illegal employees) are driving down wages overall. And by all means ignore articles like these where you are actually forced to confront the idea that not all illegal immigrants are angels who are simply looking to clean your pool or mow your lawn. But as they are limiting their killing sprees to blacks, I guess we don't need to get too excited about this.

As oil and water become more precious (expensive) the land values of LA's older neighborhoods and close suburbs will drive this problem away. Long term, I'd worry more about the 'Inland Empire' and other places, as they will get the influx as property values drive the gangs from 'their' neighborhoods.

blacks now, who next?

if it's true that mexicans want to reclaim the west for mexico, how long will it be before racially motivated killings affect other racial groups? will it take the slaughter of upper middle class white folks to get these gang bangers under control?

i live in the s.f. bay area where youth gangs -mostly latin (but also black, pacific islander and asian) are killing each other over blocks (turf) and colors in many cities around our metropolis. gang grafitti is everywhere. so many kids WANT to be gangsters.

this is madness. i know teenagers who have killed and i know teenagers who were killed over their gang affiliation.

it's an epidemic that is reaching beyond the inner cities, into the suburbs of all states in the nation.

and we are spending 8 billion dollars a month trying to clean up gang wars in iraq when we can't clean up the gang wars in our own country?

my personal feeling is california will eventually be a place that is not friendly to persons not of mexican or central american decent.

i'm 45 years old and am "from" california.

but as a non-latin woman living in the bay area, i feel my days are numbered.

peaceful, hardworking americans of all races are being driven out of our own communities by violent haters.

it will be a very sad day when the streets are controlled by murder-happy gangs and when peaceful, hardworking people can no longer feel safe in their homeland.

we can put humans on the moon, bomb each other to smithereens from thousands of miles away, clone animals...

and we can't keep the citizens of the USA free from gang violence?

The story of Mexican gang members killing blacks randomly in Los Angeles is very sad.

Gangbangers always get their stripes in senseless and brutal ways, but to target blacks and especially people who are unarmed, unprepared and inoffensive brings the stripe building process down to a whole new level of brutality and senselessness.

It is ineffably sad that dark skin is a magnet for such hate.

That one's skin tone can make activities like yard work, walking a dog, jogging, or taking a friend home from a social event a dangerous and potentially life threatening activity is unacceptably denigrating to everyone.

The only cure for such corrosive and inhuman hatred is intense self examination, real desire to change and commitment to Providence to seek a state of mind that does not pre-judge people based on a darker or lighter complexion.

Even so, individuals alone cannot save the lives of black people targetted for hate crimes.

The whole community must join together and assert the value of all light and dark skinned, and cooperate with the authorities in apprehending, prosecuting and punishing gang bangers. The dimunition of crime resulting from such efforts can only be a help and a help shared by the whole community.

not the author, I mean his sources...

The LAPD? The people who declared open war on QUOTE"niggers and spicks" END QUOTE in the first place?

The prison officials who encourage racial gangs because it focuses the inmates attention away from the REAL abusers and the REAL organized thugs, the ones in uniform. It keeps the convicts of any color from organizing a strike against their COWARD PIG asses. Pigs Eat Shit.

Targeting people for racial differences is wrong, The triggermen for the loosely organized gangs are wrong.

But the pigs have as much guilt and more because they have been orchestrating this form of "let the minorities eat each other".

Pigs choose to be pigs. They choose the life and the lifestyle, because a uniform and a badge and the anonymity given by them, and the ultimate gang mentality, gives them a sense of power they wouldn't otherwise have in their pathetic weakling lives.
They are every bit as much the Gestapo and the S.A. BrownShirts and the KGB and the Klan, as the pigs who actually wore the uniforms of THOSE agencies.

Gangs and gang mentality is what you get when your society becomes more and more a Darwinian struggle for resources between races and ethnicities. We see this now in Europe's cities and it is getting worse by the year.

It is juicing violence rates and leading to a cycle of social disharmony. We need to talk about this and we need to take action or our cities will become like a bad sci-fi novel: dystopic hell-holes where gangs stalk each other and the state stands by as a passive observer.

The Bush administration and the news media have spent a lot of time trying to scare Americans with endless reports about terrorism. Terrorism, my ass! In L.A., we share the streets with over 100,000 murderous gang members EVERY DAY. One wrong move, one accidental traffic cut-off, one misunderstood look or gesture can risk being shot or even killed –– EVERY DAY! THAT's terrorism.

What's being done about it? Is there an effort to bring in law enforcement to augment the woefully inadequate LAPD, or even to have our own neighborhood Homeland Security-type, color-coded threat assessment, to assess where we should not be on any given day? Nope. Do we hear endless prattling on talk shows about the gang threat from within? Not a chance. While the rest of the country, much of which having little to actually worry about beyond cats stuck in trees, quivers in their shoes at the POSSIBILITY of maybe a terrorist threat, we in Southern California live with 100,000+ REAL terrorist types in our midst – EVERY DAY! And – the gangs headquartered here are spreading, slowly, into the heartland.

C'mon, America, get a grip and get some perspective. What you SHOULD be worrying about are the threats being grown right here at home, not some b.s. from the Liar In Chief.

Yes, the tension between African Americans and Latinos in Los Angeles is a serious issue that we (as Californians and Angelenos) should pay attention to and work to ameliorate.

But the situation is far more complex than Brentin Mock makes it out to be, and his title, “Ethnic Cleansing,” is dangerously inflammatory and mis-applied.

The tension between blacks and Latinos in L.A. has everything to do with economic pressures, pressures created by decades of economic policies that enrich the wealthy at the cost of the working class and working poor. You would have to go all the way back to Reaganomics and the gutting of FDR’s policies. The result is that union jobs in L.A. (and other cities across the U.S.) have declined, putting many African Americans out of work. They now compete with Latinos for service jobs at less pay and with no benefits.

The kids who become gang members in Latino gangs may have been born in the U.S., but their parents are immigrants who come from rural places in Mexico, El Salvador, etc., who have never met blacks until they arrived in this country. Their ideas of blacks derive from racist constructions of color hierarchy that date back to Spanish colonization, plus from junky movies from the 1970s that inevitably cast blacks only as criminals. These attitudes persist when they arrive here, and they pass them on to their children.

And the result, what we see replayed in media images, is hegemony at work: people towards the economic bottom killing each other and fighting with each other, leaving the powers that put them in that situation in the first place completely unscathed. The middle- and upper-classes tut-tut at such “animalistic” behavior and hold themselves blameless, claiming no responsibility.

SHAME ON YOU, ALTERNET, for not demanding a more thoughtful, in-depth article from Brentin Mock. If you want to be taken seriously as a news source, you must be more exacting than this. This subject is important, but the author trivializes it by offering only sensationalism, not analysis.

the underlying issues

I'm a former teacher. I taught ESL in an urban middle school and then high school. The middle school fed into the high school. We had serious problems with gangs in both schools. I watched the metamorphosis of many of my students from young people trying to be successful, or at least get by in their schools, to young people trying to be successful in their gangs. What happened? Why is this so common with our youth living in urban cities? I think those questions are so important. It may be easier to label gang members as bad or evil and just wish they could be washed away like some stain. However, they did not start out that way. While some current gang members do come from families with histories of gang membership, most do not. Most become involved as youth. Why?

I can think of many possible reasons, however, my point is not to answer these questions. I know it is important that I consider these questions, investigate them for myself and then see what I can do in my own neighborhood and community to ensure our youth do not end up in a situation where they join a gang, whatever the reason.

If you are looking for a place to start, I recently read a book titled, Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? by Beverly Daniel-Tatum, PhD. In this book, the author outlines many fundamental concepts about race and racial identity that helped me understand more about how to be part of the solution in a country that still has deep race-related problems.

I choose to accept responsibility for what is happening in my country, in my community. I choose to be part of the solution. I choose. I act.

A lot of Blacks don't seem to do well in the thinking department.

These concepts are obvious to most people, but some just don't get it.

- If you build your house in a tropical area prone to massive hurricanes, its going to get destroyed, eventually.

- If you can barely provide for yourself, don't have kids

- If you walk around looking like a violent criminal, don't be surprised when you get treated like one

- If the country your in is oppressing you, immigrate somewhere else!

I know lots of Americans who moved to Europe or Canada because they didn't like the new policies of the guv'ment.

You know -the people who gunned down Biggie Smalls beat minorities (including minors) and target brown people on a daily basis. Hell they even hustled for Suge Knight.
Yeah -that LAPD, stupid.

Dear old AlterNet is still pumping out propaganda. This is a piece without empirical foundation. The actions described are typical BLACK OPS - no pun intended. It is sure nice to know AlterNet is so deeply imbedded. What a pile.

When you've seen one gang ("come and be like us or go to hell") you've seen them all.

Perhaps people can begin to understand why the writers of our Constitution promoted individualism.

They had all emmigrated from Europe (or descended from families less than a generation or two away from there). The memories of exactly the kind of group-enforced conformity behind racism and religious prejudice were fresh memories.

It is ironic that today, as the US tries to save the world from itself, we cannot even save our own cities.

Not Just in LA

Racism against blacks is extreme to the level of being fatal in LA but it is also massively pervasive in most of California. We are from the East Coast and have an adult light skinned daughter who is mixed black/white. She has been attacked, called the N word more times than she can count and can't travel around Northern California alone without a huge dog and a loaded rifle next to her. People have tried to run her off the road countless times. If it isn't the Mexicans, then it is the White Supremicists. If she tries to get service somewhere that it mostly staffed by Mexicans, she is ignored or treated rudely. What the H... is going on on this country? I guess Sarte was right...in a nation that worships war and violence in the end it is the war of each against the other.

Why This New Level Of Racial Violence

Capitalism’s contradictory impulses have begun bumping into each other. It’s happening in the national debate on immigration and it happened in the recent Dubai Ports World controversy. Profits are the system’s lifeblood so the ruling class craves an immigrant guest worker program and the United Arab Emirates’ petrodollars but the rabid anti-immigrant and anti-Arab sentiment coursing through U.S. society has so far blocked their designs. Racism and xenophobia and every other tactic of division have been the guarded carefully by capitalism with good reason and they will sharpen as the system nears an untenable state. Unity of the working class is the only potentially deadly threat to this system. White supremacy, Black Nationalism, religious fundamentalism, sexism, homophobia, and all the crackpot schemes and the nihilistic cults of the bourgeoisie, like al-Qaeda, are dead ends for all of us who work.

Anthony Prudhomme

Anthony Prudhomme was slain by members of the Avenues, a Latino street gang. But he was not a rival gang member, or a police informant, or a drug dealer. The Avenues did not target him for the content of his character, or even the contents of his apartment.

They targeted him for the color of his skin.

Prudhomme was murdered because he identified himself as black (he was in fact mixed-race) in a neighborhood occupied by one of the many Latino street gangs in Los Angeles County.

It was obviously not the color of this skin. Mexicans are often very dark-skinned. Anthony didn't look "black" but he made the mistake (as many mulattoes do) of identifying as "black" even though his mother is white.
