Don't Take Relationship Advice From Facebook

By Amelia , The Frisky. Posted November 20, 2008.

According to the Facebook ads surrounding my profile, I'm in dire need of a relationship and a diet. My male friends get no such advice.

Hey, see that ad to the right? Kind of sad huh? I woke up on my 29th birthday (last Sunday), checked my Facebook profile for birthday well-wishers and saw that ad glaring back at me! It's been there, non-stop practically, all week, a not-so-subtle reminder that two months prior to my 29th birthday, my fiance broke up with me and I became, yes, ALONE AGAIN. If the accuracy of this particular targeted ad weren't so freakishly detailed (how on earth did the tech bots know "a man suddenly pulled away"?) to the point of hilarity, it might actually make me depressed.

I'm convinced that Facebook ads for women, outside of the ones targeted at personal interests (I do love yoga, wine, soap operas, wine, and puppies!), come in two categories.

1. Love/Dating/Relationship-Related: Dating sites and self help if you're single, engagement rings and romantic vacation ads if you're in a relationship, and weddings, weddings, weddings if you're engaged. During the nine months I was engaged, my Facebook page was inundated with wedding ads, for photographers, locations, and even marriage counseling advice ads. Now that I'm single, it's all online dating ads -- self help loser nonsense. Aside from that social networking wine club. That sounds rad.

My Guy Friends Reported: No dating or romance related ads at all.

2. Dieting & Fitness: Thanks to Facebook, I cannot escape Acai Berries. Apparently they make you skinny! And apparently Facebook wants me to ingest them, in all their many forms, constantly. Why does Facebook think I am fat? Nothing in my profile indicates an obsession with working out or a penchant for anorexia. In fact, my profile professes my love for cheese and cured meats. Catherine wonders if Facebook also uses some sort of special technology that can tell if your face is round or not.

My Guy Friends Reported: No fitness or weight loss ads at all, although one did get ads for braces and teeth whitening. This would indicate that Facebook does have some sort of visual component for ad targeting, and doesn't just use keywords. I never thought his teeth were that bad ...

Facebook isn't alone in finding weaknesses and targeting ads that pick at them. Tracie Egan, who writes for Jezebel, wrote a post on her personal blog, One D At A Time, the other day about how she got in a fight over email with her fiance. All of the targeted sponsored links/ads for that particular email chain had to do with broken engagements and "stopping negative emotions." Yikes, one fight and the relationship is dunzo? Thanks for the faith, Google. Anyway, I went back to a couple email exchanges with my ex to see what diagnosis Gmail gave my life as a result. For the record, I do not f$#king need anger goddamn management, GOOGLE, so PISS OFF!!!

male enhancement ads

I have seen ads for "male enhancement" - which I think counts for body image of some kind. In fact, I am getting really tired of seeing that bug-eyed woman in the ad asking, "Need a bigger penis? - Surprise her at home!" Or something like that.

Funny article, btw.

At this very second, the three sidebar ads on my facebook profile read:

"Meet Successful Women- Check out your sexy single options at Thirty Plus Singles."

"32 & Still Single?- Meet the hottest & sexiest singles for free at Mate 1 now!"

"Meet Local Women- Check out Thirty Plus Singles to meet attractive local women."

When I click through to "more ads" (an odd concept, in & of itself- "oh, yes, more ads please!"), I get another 13 ads trying to get me to use some type of dating service, as well as a fitness ad & the stupid acai diet.

So I guess I'm a woman? I would have figured that out earlier, but the penis kept throwing me.

Either the author of this piece is reaching outrageously far to link facebook's aggressive & invasive ad policy to some sort of gender oppression, or else her male friends are full of crap.

Go watch the Minority Report- or go see it again- because THAT is the future we're headed for. The first wave of it, the Web 2.0 sites everyone loves to post porn pictures of themselves on lately, is only the first step. I've never seen the appeal of putting up about myself on sites like this, probably because I like real life and actual friends, though I guess I may be in the minority. Like people bitching about TV, if you subject yourself to the stupidities of social networking sites, you deserve the crap shoveled at you from advertizers. Also like the TV, you can, at any time of your choosing, turn it off and unplug. Why not use the time to actually improve yourself, your condition or life instead of finding new and irrelevant BS to put on your Facebook or whatever page? Unlike web 2.0, REAL self-improvement works, and you can't get that in a virtual world.

Hello,

Yes, this kind of advertising on Facebook and other networking sites is based on what you punch in your profiles.

Incidentally, I wrote a post on the same, on my blog, yesterday. It is called, "My New Deodorant". I think it'll be of relevance and interest to you.

The Marketing Game

Ah yes, praying on our (supposed) insecurities - the way of the marketer, or should that be marketeer? The best defense seems to be an ample sense of humor and a touch of sarcasm, exactly what this article displays. Bravo.

I am new to this facebook business. My son got me into it because his daughter got him into it.
But I always went under the assumption since the onset of Email that none of the Internet is really private. Especially since Congress helped Cheney's spooks perpetuate the Patriot Act.

But look on the bright side. Look upon yourself as a potential stimulator to the economy and patriot so buy your boyfriend some penis lengthener as a birthday present if it is his birthday or an unbirthday present if it isn't his birthday or would that be for yourself, anyhow ,Lady.

The "29 and alone again? If you've had a man suddenly pull away, then read this" ad is up in Alternet, right next to the paragraph where she mentions it.

It's a tiny little world.

I think Facebook and MySpace are idiotic places where you are supposed to have freedom to express yourself but college admissions and employers use them against you to EXCLUDE YOU FROM GETTING INTO THEIR SCHOOL OR HAVING A GOOD JOB!

This is just another abuse of a terrible concept --to make women feel HORRIBLE if they aren't in a romantic relationship with a MAN and feel like a CRIMINAL or a SOCIAL PARIAH if they happen to be a bit overweight and not anorexic or bullemic!

SO WHAT DOES THIS TELL YOU ABOUT USING A SITE THAT LETS THIS KIND OF GARBAGE SPEW THEIR SEXIST, DISCRIMINATORY PROPAGANDA TO THEIS SITE SUBSCRIBERS?

IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE ADS ON A SITE, DON'T USE THE SITE.

I can't tell that these sites have ever done anything for anyone except get them in a lot of trouble and excluded from a lot of things and even gotten them convicted for criminal offenses.

Ads flat-out stereotyped

If it makes you feel any better, one of my guy friends keeps getting gay singles ads - and he's straight; they're just stereotyping everyone, he's a dancer so they assume he's gay.

When did an ad equal relationship advice. If the generation of an ad is data mining and marketing, how is that relationship advice?

I get that advice and advertisement both start adv but that doesn't mean they are the same thing.

Targeted Ads and Databases

facebook creates a profile of all it's users based on the information you give when you sign up for an account. If the ads seems surprisingly
close to your interests- it's because they are based on specific info YOU GAVE THEM.

You might be interested to do a google search on who owns and who created facebook.
People really need to vibe who they give their personal info to It is sold
to thousands of 3rd party vendors who keep selling to others.
It is also kept in 100's of govt databases.
