McCain and Palin Want Women's Votes But Do Women Want Them?

By Amie Newman, RH Reality Check. Posted September 23, 2008.

Ultimately, women have the power to decide this election. And unmarried women, the largest voting bloc, tend to lean left.

Women's Voices, Women Vote (WVWV) are encouraging the unmarried women of America to unify around a set of core issues and vote. Through its "Unmarried Women's Agenda" that includes equal pay, expanded health care coverage and investments in public education, WVWV is hoping to reach this particular voting bloc this election season. But why?

According to WVWV, unmarried women "have the potential to elect the next President."

In an email, WVWV writes that "While married women favored McCain over Barack Obama by 49 to 42 percent, unmarried women supported Obama over McCain by 60 to 30 percent...Numbering 53 million, these single, separated, divorced and widowed women represent 26 percent of the voting age population." Add to this that for the first time in history, almost as many adult American women are unmarried as married, and we can see why Sarah Palin may have been a political choice for the GOP. But was it the right one?

The GOP leadership and social conservative movement have thrust Sarah Palin, Republican Vice Presidential candidate, front and center into the spotlight. But, of course, this election -- as any election -- should not be about the candidates as much as it is about us -- Americans on the receiving end of these candidates' policy stances. With that in mind, there are a host of critical reproductive and sexual health and rights and family policies in play about which Americans deserve to know where each set of candidates stand; issues like access to health care, teen pregnancy prevention programs, federal funding of contraception, comprehensive sexuality education, equal pay for women, child care subsidies, ensuring access to pre-K for all and more.

But instead of clear policy stances on these issues at the GOP convention or in the surrounding media attention what we have been privy to are endless distractions about Sarah Palin's family, the personal matters and private choices Ms. Palin and her family have made over the last few months and a religious right bloc that has firmly cemented their support for said choices -- support that falls in direct conflict with the rhetoric, agenda and policies they promote for the rest of American families.

Progressive bloggers and a handful of journalists have attempted to link Palin's familial issues to concrete policy questions specifically related to women's health and family support services including those issues above that "did not make the cut" at the Republican National Convention.

The McCain campaign has been vocal about Sarah Palin as a woman who "understands what women go through, the struggles they have, the issues they face every day." Positioning Palin as a hockey-mom/mother of a special needs child, the campaign believes they can win over undecided female voters with this message. But it seems that women are not buying it.

According to a recent poll, six in ten female voters in the U.S. see McCain's pick of Sarah Palin for Vice Presidential running mate as driven by politics "rather than any sense of conviction on John McCain's part that she has the experience and qualities to make a good vice-president." In addition, 56% of the women polled said they were "put off" by Palin's legislative record as well as her stances on a range of moral issues.

Women -- undecided or independent, married or unmarried -- don't want to just be able to relate to a Vice President as if she's their college roommate or friend next door. They want to know what a President and Vice President will actually do to help them with the "struggles they have" and "the issues they face every day." What kinds of issues?

women voters! If they are so short-sighted as to think that women are STUPID enough to vote for them only because there's a woman on the ticket, let them be shocked on November 5th after they lose.

McStain/Palin are insulting to women. Women will show them just how insulting they are at the polls.

I absolutely can NOT stand any of these repug-nican PIGS, lipstick or none! BUT....just to think I am responsible, even indirectly so, for supporting john mc jerko's national chair-woman by having my store on eBay! I mean that " former" eBay CEO named meg whitman, whom, by the way; is STILL THERE ON eBAY'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS getting her " cut" from the fees we all pay to eBay! so far I've been paying out more in fees to ebay than I have been profiting from the sales! and what's even worse is this. as much as MEG WHITMAN says she " started ebay with a vision to help others, such as stay-at-home moms; to start their own, home-based businesses"? she is among those whom will never allocate the funds to the small business administration [www.sba.gov] nessesary to help us start them! REPUG-NICAN WOMEN LIKE MEG WHITMAN are definitely NOT too good for small business development at all!

Where are all these cheap women?
Posted by: MartianBachelor on Sep 24, 2008 1:47 AM

"Women are still paid less per dollar than their male counterparts for work of equal value. This varies dramatically, of course, depending on what the color of your skin is, and what your ethnic background is. Women makes 77 cents for every one dollar a man in a comparable position brings in..."

If the above were true, why would any business ever hire a man? Just for the pleasure of paying him more?

And why wouldn't anyone with even a minimal amount of savvy start a business and hire only women, undercut their competitors on labor costs by a substantial amount, take over the market, and clean up big in the end? But that just doesn't happen. Or is the author really saying it takes about four women to do what three men can do?

And, if the author's claim is true, why do US women account for 80+% of the discretionary spending in the economy? US women constitute the largest economy on the planet, which is why so much commercial advertising is directed at them. What are they doing, printing all that money they're out there filling the malls spending in their basements?

Besides, unequal pay for equal work and discrimination in hiring (the real equality issues) have been illegal in North America for decades. So put me down as being extremely skeptical about transparent lies which only serve the purpose of stoking resentment about not having even MORE.

Unmarried Females of the past 50 to 60 Years...
Posted by: One American Lady on Sep 24, 2008 4:36 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
may Not Be Voting for the Proper Reasons.
Many Unmarried Females, have had Rocky Marriages, & are More into the Dating Scene..
Singles Scene...& View Obama, as a Handsome Hunk, & voting because he is a Black American,
Making History in America... & they want to Cast a Vote... for the Outstanding "Oddity" of the Situation.
McCain is Older, & he chose a "younger chick", as his "running mate"... & Palin was a Model, something many other Females of America, didn't get to do... so Palin may "Outshine Them" & Women "don't like competition" in any situation.
On the Basic "homefront"... most females, older, unmarried, really "don't wish to vote for Obama or McCain"... esp. the Baby Boomers, who coming into the Years to Receive Retirement & Social Security Benefits... & neither Candidate, has proven that they can "do All Things, in the Best Interest of the Citizens of America"... for which the Government, was Designed.
All of a Sudden, the Word "Independent" is getting a lot of Attention.
Some people, are wondering if the votes, for an "Independent Political Party", will Really, Effect the Outcome of the Election, this year.
The Public "Do Not Like, what they are seeing, with the Wall Street problems & the Bailout".
People are talking like it is the Economy, that is foremost, but actually, that is not what they say, when they are Not Faced with the Media attention.
Their Basic Opinion, is that "They ... the Public Citizens... are Not Being Properly Represented, by those Who Have Been Voted, into Office, to Reppresent Them"... but most individuals, do Not Wish to Make This Opinion, Public.
So, this year, for voting in the Presidential position... They're Taking a Neutral Stand... for the Most Part... if they Vote as They have Voiced, in their own Neighborhoods.
The public, believes that "the Leaders are Getting Richer, while They are Getting Poorer",
& don't like what is happening to the Taxpayer's Money.... those that are still of the Working Class, that is.
With the Baby Boomers, Coming on, to Retire, there's more People, gonna be on Retirement, and / or, Social Security Disability... that... some people are beginning to wonder: HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL THERE REALLY BE, IN THE *WORKING CLASS*, TO PAY TAXES?
Particularly in the State of Oklahoma... where the Media, already states that: "25%+ ( % increasing each day)... of the People, ARE MENTALLY ILL... & receiving SS Disability Payments, or Will Receive the SS Benefits, for a Mental Disability... Mental Limitations...
From viewing much of the Mental problems, all that I can see... is " the males, between the ages of 18 to about 44... are "mother oriented"... & also, develop habits... involving body ailments... & some are very active, such as Raising Horses or other animals, & being a cowboy... & claiming they are Unable to Perform a Job Duty... & they can still Lift more than One Bale of Hay, Bronc Ride, or Drive a Truck & Work...for "under the table money".
The females... single... most have children at home... or Raising an Adult Child...Again...which is Beginning to be a Lifestyle in America...
Adult Children (& their children) Returning Home to Mom...
So, No Wonder...that "there is Unmarried Women, in America"... what man, wants a women, who has a houseful of Grown Children... who Rule the Roost... so to speak.
(not necessarily my opinion... but it's the truth).
Grown Children, Returning Home, is a Growing Problem in America.
So, McCain is to Old, for a "Dream Date & Obama is the Younger... Dream Man"... so, by natural instinct... & Not Voting for the Proper Reasons, guess who the Unmarried Women, will probably or Might Vote for, if they vote for Either of the Two Main Political Candidates, at all?
One American Lady

I came across a post on another site posted by Martianbachelor about women who actually want their men to be warmongers even when there is a soft side to these young men who want to say no. Now, I don't agree with him on everything against women but I have come across some women who are more macho-egotistical than even men and I came across this post that he wrote two years ago, long before Palin came up obviously. This got me to remember that there are so men who are just as moderate and liberal as many women in this world and yet both parties abandon these fair minded men. It's bad enough that not only can women wear everything men can wear and play all their sports and their own but men are restricted in terms of fashion and sports unless they want to be persecuted. Below is a description of the pro-macho women that pretty much explains why Palin "identifies" with them:

Hey, let’s perpetuate some stereotypes about the peaceful, loving, nurturing female and the violent, bestial male. Naturally I’m not buying it — plenty of women voted for Bush, and plenty of men didn’t vote for him. Probably the strongest and clearest anti-war voice in 2004 was Ralph Nader, and hardly anyone male or female voted for him. Go figure. [For the record, both my sisters voted for Bush, while my brother and I being in hopelessly red states voted for Ralph...]

“Contrary to many myths about man’s natural proclivity to fight wars, most … men do not make good soldiers. Most men have to be inspired to fight; if that fails, they have to be forced at gunpoint by their commanding officers. Numerous studies have shown that the average soldier is extremely timorous in battlefield situations and that he ‘regresses’ and reacts ‘passively’ under enemy fire. Obviously, as it often includes military obligation, the male role often requires certain kinds of discipline or indoctrination to put reluctant youths in the proper frame of mind.” - David Gilmore

There’s something else you’re missing. Women love these knuckledragging warmongers. I happen to live near an Army base. They’re the grunts and cannon-fodder — yes, there’s still a cavalry in the Army — the lowest of the expendable lower-class and working-class males. Since unlimited immigration has knocked the hell out of wages for unskilled labor, they don’t have a lot of good career choices. Quite a few haven’t made it back from Iraq. And you know what? Everyone of them has a wife. I see the stories on the local news as they trickle in. Yes, it may come as a shock but women actually want these Neanderthals, and what’s worse — they breed with them like mad! The same could be said for other thuggish and gang-leader types.

There are also quite well documented instances during WWII of women publicly shaming men who wouldn’t fight, goading them to own up to their male responsibilities to fight.

I’d also note that it was feminists who were raising a big stink before 9/11 about the Taliban in Afghanistan and what they did to women, effectively egging on the warrior types in this country to be “real men” and do something about it.

The more things don’t change the more they stay the same.

Maybe wars end when it’s the anti-war activists and conscientious objectors who attract the hot babe groupies. But I’m not holding my breath because I know that the average woman is just about as unevolved as the average man is. And when I go to the malls I can’t help but think we wouldn†?t be having all these resource wars if women would just stop buying so much STUFF.

Why did Bill Not jack up National Security after the '93 bombing of the WTC?
I voted for Bil twice ( sincerest apologies Now) and was an Avid Defender of both through out the '90's- But Frnakly I'm not sure Who I hate more Now Bush or Bill, Hillary or Sarah- same shit just different Camoflague!

The woman has had her fifteen minutes of fame (fourteen minutes too long). At this point, any woman who votes for this stupid broad knowing what she is and what she stands for is my ENEMY!

Sarah Palin is an EMBARASSMENT to educated, thoughtful and hard-working women regardless of color. She is unqualified to hold the second highest office in the land, and yet the excuses roll in as if her mediocrity is some sort of "asset". She speaks of "transparency" and "accountability" , then stonewalls when the focus is on potential abuse of power.

Can we PLEASE talk about something (or SOMEONE) who actually MATTERS?

Also, check out this RALLY IN ANCHORAGE ... very impressive rally, especially considering the size of the city. To get 25 people to show up on a cold wet Alaska day is impressive!
