Rush Limbaugh Wins as Election's Biggest Manipulator

By Rory O'Connor, AlterNet. Posted May 14, 2008.

The media and Democrats need to stop buying into -- and promoting -- the so-called "Limbaugh effect."

With Democratic enthusiasm waxing, Republican energy waning, and more than four out of five voters convinced the country is now on the wrong track, one would think hard-right-wing talk radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh would be near-suicidal.

But no! As it stands, Limbaugh -- now in his 20th year as the universally acknowledged "Grand Poobah" of talk radio, with an estimated weekly audience of about 13.5 million listeners -- looks to be the biggest winner thus far in the ongoing presidential primary sweepstakes.

From attacking Republican front runner John McCain early in the process to "dreaming" of -- and some say illegally calling for -- riots at August's Democratic National Convention in Denver, all the way to more recent efforts such as "Operation Chaos," aimed at inserting himself and his followers into the Democratic primaries in an attempt to weaken Barack Obama by supporting Hillary Clinton, the so-called "Limbaugh effect" has garnered excessive attention from the 'drive-by' mainstream media that Limbaugh purports to hate but actually depends on and manipulates adroitly. Although the real-world effect of "Operation Chaos" is doubtful -- at least in terms of influencing the Democratic primaries -- it has clearly been wildly successful in its real mission of promoting Limbaugh and his nationally syndicated radio program.

Front page coverage in the Washington Post, cover treatment from Time magazine, prominent placement on ABC News, a glowing feature article on the influential Politico.com site -- the examples of Limbaugh's clever salesmanship are everywhere. As Politico's Jonathan Martin put it, "Limbaugh's skills as a political provocateur, as much P.T. Barnum as conservative ideologue, are such that he can fuel buzz in the political-media world like few others. In other words, Operation Chaos was good box office, and that may well have been the point."

Well, of course it was the point! Limbaugh himself admitted it in an email exchange with Martin, wherein he wrote, "In my universe, there is no doubt it worked like a charm. My audience loved it, they participated in it, they had fun with it, as did I."

Limbaugh's clever politico-media manipulation was aided and abetted by Democratic operatives and supporters of Obama for obviously partisan reasons -- despite ample evidence that there was as much bluster as basis for the claims that right-wingers had crossed over in droves to support Clinton in Texas and Ohio contests and more recently in Indiana. (For example, David Axelrod, Obama's top strategist, repeatedly assured reporters that he attributed Clinton's victory in Indiana to "Operation Chaos.") Although it is unsurprising that Obama's flacks spent a lot of time and effort noting and promoting the so-called "Limbaugh effect," Obama supporter and onetime presidential wannabe John Kerry really should have known better than to claim Clinton only won Indiana as a result of Limbaugh's intervention.

Hillary Clinton, Limbaugh Lite

We've had conservative governance since 1980, including the Bill Clinton years, but for the past 7 years the neocons have done as they pleased. With the enthusiastic support of the Christian right, they've waged illegal and aggressive war, enriched corrupt war profiteers, tortured people, alienated our friends and multiplied our enemies, given huge tax breaks to the rich paid for with massive deficit spending, gutted our constitutional rights, subverted the Constitution, packed the judiciary with extremists, gagged scientists, undermined public health and despoiled the environment.

One would think that arrogant, proudly ignorant bigots like Limbaugh would have lost all credibility, and in the minds of anyone with an IQ higher than an ameba,he has. But he, along with the televangelists, still has a considerable audience of the ignorant, mean-spirited folks that have earned us the scorn of the world.

Hillary Clinton is even trying her hand at being Limbaugh Lite to court the rednecks and retirees who make up her base, while McCain thinks if he waves the flag, rattles his saber and pays homage to famous conservatives he'll get elected. And he just might.

More important than the red phone is the golden phone–the one used by lobbyists, major campaign contributors and other high rollers to influence policy. And we can be sure that all three of the candidates would be quick to answer cheerfully, but none more than Hillary Clinton, who shamelessly sold pardons to criminals through her brother.

Limbaugh is a guy who plays to his loyal audience , much like Howard Dean does, and much like Amy Goodman does. It is all demographic-oriented opinioneering, not real journalism.

The real journalists are on the streets in Beirut, or are busy filing Freedom of Information Acts requests with government agencies, or are writing books (check out Antonia Juhasz: The Bush Agenda for a good example.)

The well-meaning folks at many liberal left organizations seem to believe that winning means beating the right, and thus appear to have bought into a fake puppet show argument that ends up pitting various groups against one another, while massive government robbery, aka congressional-military-civilian contracting deals and multi-billion dollar handouts to greedy bankers who bet too high - yes, all that goes mostly unnoticed in the Rush Limbaugh vs. Amy Goodman debate room.

Attacking the right is easy, but what about spurring divisiveness along racial, ethnic, gender, citizen-immigrant, and age lines? Isn't that a lot of what many of these mainstream left wing opinion sites are busy doing, while ignoring the real corporate and government crimes?

Look at David Corn's blog for an example of this - an ongoing commentary on the Obama-vs-Clinton race, and no mention at all of any major corporate or environmental or war & peace news. It really is odd - why isn't every single left-wing media outlet running a daily impeachment section on the front page, along with a daily Iraq section, and a daily fair trade news section as well?

That's how stories get covered. Ever watch "All the President's Men?" At the very end, when the Watergate story gets covered, there is this montage of printing presses running off headline after headline after headline.

Story after story has been broken, each bigger than Watergate - illegal domestic spying before 9/11 by the NSA, AT&T and Viacom, for example, or the stolen 2000 election and the rigged voter rolls and voting machines, the outing of a Valerie Plame as political retaliation along with the U.S. Attorney firings, Cheney's kickbacks to Halliburton, Bechtel, KBR and others, - that's the very short list.

What hasn't happened is the last scene of the movie - the amplification of the story as other papers pick it up and repeat it. Instead, we get this loud and eerie silence.

Consider what stories the lefty and righty press do cover in detail. Amy Goodman's #1 story this year must have been the "Jenna Six" black vs white racism hoopla. Alternet has posted more inflammatory gender-based articles than most anyone, and the Guerrilla News Network goes for the MySpace version of environmental anti-activism. Counterpunch, for their part, trot out the Marxist-socialist line at every opportunity. Many good stories do get through, but that's true for every single corporate media outlet in the country.

Thus, while you can come here and read left-wing opinion and recycled 1960s-era memes on race and gender and similar issues, you really will have to look much farther afield for real news and analysis.

Basically, there are no such things as trustworthy news sources - trust is best kept for you and your spouse, dog or cat.

Anyhow, a better bet for the biggest election manipulator award must go to Charles Gibson, George Stephanopolous and the ABC-Disney News Emporium. Go back and look at the debates that Kucinich and Edwards were in - every single time one of those two brought up a real issue, the "moderators" would immediately switch topics - especially after Kucinich mentioned oil and Iraq in the same breath.

RUSH IS SYMPTOM AND CATALYST TO MOVE BEYOND
Posted by: skizum on May 14, 2008 2:45 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Rush is an aggressive blow-hard knucklehead who is a good manipulator of passive and complacent thinkers.

When people hear something often enough, it will be believed more; in fact this is the basis for most learning processes. Repetitive messaging works in education, propaganda, advertising, religion and most other skill/belief building methodologies. However, this does not mean that what is believed is based on objective truth.

We are a society which has developed the ability to communicate and receive ideas with unprecedented frequency and efficiency to the point where only the most dramatic and in-your-face ideas get attention. Our daily lives are so filled with externally generated ideas and messages that our ability to critically weigh the objective truth of these ideas has been diminished. Simply put, it has become harder to stay focussed and spend time thinking critically about our external influences because the voracious cycle of information input keeps our conscious thoughts occupied at a faster-than-human rate of information digestion; we are overwhelmed. It is more challenging for the average person to take the time necessary to consider and reflect on the object truth of ideas and information.

Our beliefs are based on our experiences and our experiences will continue to move us further away from, and closer to, that which is objectively true about the world we live in. How can we influence this process such that beliefs can be shifted closer to the objective truth. The most effective way forward towards this goal may be to employ 2 basic strategies:

1) Spend time learning how to debunk manipulative messaging to reveal objective truth and share that experience so that this process becomes wide spread, fun and entertaining. Here is an impromptu forum in context to people like Rush that I started with this goal in mind; feel free ad add your observations to this work in progress.

The better we get at discovering objective truth, the more this will influence our beliefs as a society. The more our beliefs are effected, the more our actions will be influenced as a society, based on the reality of objective truth rather than manipulative propaganda. How about more properganda...?

Human Behavior (our actions) is determined by our Human Nature (our emotional, physical, psychological, intellectual and spiritual needs inherent to humans) as influenced by our Nurture (the ideas and experiences which shape our beliefs). Therefor it makes sense to:

2) Learn to appreciate the value of understanding and utilizing the objective truth to fully satisfy our basic human needs in a sustainable fashion. This an unavoidable reality if we hope to evolve and thrive as a species. Anytime we avoid or fight the objective truth it creates tension, repercussion and imbalance in our society and individual daily lives.

The vastly overwhelming majority of people who live or have lived on this planet, no matter who they are, what religion they observe, what political persuasion they adhere to, what culture they live in or the color of their skin; they all want or wanted to live a humane life.

If you can accept this assumption, the next logical questions are; what are the elements that might define what a humane lifestyle consists of? What balance of these elements creates a humane lifestyle over the course of time? How could one assess and adjust their level of humane balance? Is their a universal set of basic principals which humanity can bond around to achieve a peaceful, productive, balanced, fulfilling and sustainable world?

These are the questions we must discover the answers to.

Limbaugh appears to be living in a make believe world. It is too bad too many Americans believe and "follow" him. He seems to have written, in his mind, his own "Surnow" of _24_ fame, script and probably thinks he's the equivalent of Jack Bauer. Thing is, Limbaugh is just a silly man. He's no JB and he's not "the Equalizer". If he keeps up this influence thru his "sheeple" he could be very dangerous for the country. But then, he is NOT The Equalizer.

I doubt if the South has changed that much that O'Bbama, as good as he is, can carry Dixie. I served in World War 3 and never met a single Southern Republican. That changed with Nixon's "southern Strategy" which essentially was an 'anti-black' strategy Today the GOP speaks with a southern accent. They nominated the Democrat they hoped will be the weakest and then in the real election in November they will vote for the GOP

"As it stands, Limbaugh -- now in his 20th year as the universally acknowledged "Grand Poobah" of talk radio, with an estimated weekly audience of about 13.5 million listeners -- ..."

13.5 million is no small number. Mr Limbaugh is well aware of just what Vein to access for his IV Drip of Chauvinism, Provincialism and Idiocy (in the strictest, most Greco-Roman senses of that term) in the Body Politic, the Body Economic and the Body Social.

Demagogues and polemicists such as Mr Limbaugh need to be countered, and especially democrats (of and not of the Party with this Name) are well founded to keep a strict and wary eye on protagonists such as he. There is no shortage of them. This country consists of approximately 300 million individual citizens. By far, not all of these individuals vote. In an election year of the magnitude of this one, 13.5 million listeners is definitely no small number.

When issues of Hard Right, Authoritarian and downright Fascist tendencies are involved, such as the 'values' and 'culture wars' issues of such procedures as abortion, education, science-religion, faith-reason considerations, polls consistently hover in the teens to mid 20 percentiles with respect to approval and affirmation. Not something for democrats to take too lightly. It wouldn't be prudent to minimize or discount the "Message Multiplying" force of those such as Mr Limbaugh.

Limbo and his evil twin, Sean Hannity, whored themselves big time for the Repugnicans in the 2006 elections. BUT ALL OF THEM HAD LOST. They then shrilly whored themselves for Rudy Giuliani for the republican nomination. Despite that, HE LOST BIG TIME!! Hannity and others were at a serious loss why they came out the loser.

I understand a lot of folks listen to their radio show. But they listen strictly for the fictional, lacking in substance, mindless entertainment that it is. The majority, thank goodness, don't take them seriously.

Rush Limbaugh committed a felony.
Posted by: KeepsonTickn on May 14, 2008 5:38 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The author seems to gloss over the fact that in at least one state, the act of crossing over for the reasons promoted by Limbaugh is a felony, and there is legal precedent for prosecuting and imprisoning him for promoting it.

In the case of Schenck v. United States, the Supreme Court upheld as constitutional the conviction of an individual promoting lawbreaking (draft dodging)in printed flyers. Thus it established the illegality of speech which presents a "clear and present danger" to government institutions (such as the electoral process, for instance).

In Brandenburg v. Ohio, the court narrowed the clear and present danger rule with a test of "imminent lawless action," overturning the conviction of a Ku Klux Klan leader who advocated unspecified "revengeance" against "niggers," and "Jews." This test introduced three components, (intent, imminence, and likelihood) - all of which are integral to Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" along with very specific instructions for exactly how to break the law, and Limbaugh's own analysis of the destructive effect on the democratic process.

Limbaugh's exhortations, and testimonials from listeners who acknowledge breaking the law at his behest can be confirmed simply by reviewing the tapes of his program. Whether it was effective in overturning the primaries is irrelevant to the law. Schenk went to jail even though we won World War I. Rush Limbaugh belongs in jail too.

The most pernicious aspect of this ongoing partisan lawbreaking from the right, is that every case like this emboldens individuals to commit new crimes. It is time for this to stop.

answer: whining. letting some blowhard junkie run your party is a great way to lose elections. of course, the democratic "party" could use lessons on winning from the republicans, but they're all too smart to learn.

why doesn't al franken run the republican party? why can't george stephanopoulos kneecap bush? how did hillary clinton, of all people, become the Great White Hope, and not ann coulter? maybe because instead of a party of people with shared common interests, the democrats really are just a wastebasket full of assorted losers.

complaining about radio clowns is just not going to get the job done, no matter how much pity you get from your mother. rush limbaugh's not the problem (where was he in '68? '72? 80? 84? 88?). the so-called democratic party is the problem.

What's depressing is the amount of people who can't think on their own and need someone to tell them what to do. Rush believes his power is in the ability to influence. Have you ever seen the letters to the editor after Rush tells them to do something? It is like a bunch of kids playing copy and trying to change the words around a bit. Sad that people can't think anymore, or don't want to. Instead of adding 2 plus 2 in their minds, they pull out the calculator and let something else think for them. It is a nation of fools.

Now, I think it was time to throw tweeddle-dee out and vote in tweeddle-dumber. Something happened on the way to the inaugural ball. Obama got in front of the bush-clinton express. Now the train whistle blows a different tune, bush-clinton-black man-bad american-bush-clinton. It is a good thing they are not racists, nothing personal just business.

When Rush first came on the scene 20 years ago, I thought he would be no big deal because I couldn't fathom anyone actually wanting to listen to the gas bag.

What a fool I am! There are 13 million folks in this country who proved me to be an elitist intellectual snob!

I live in Tennessee, where Rush is incredibly popular. People who listen to Rush all the time live in an alternate universe. It is unreal to try and talk to them because they are so ignorant and brainwashed. But they think they have all the answers! They would say I am brainwashed and Rush is the real deal. This is why I do not leave the house much to talk to my neighbors!

Rush and his buddies like Billo and Sean will go down in history as some of the most effective propaganda artists of all time. Sorry Joseph Goebbels. You have been dethroned.

Americans Are the Real Culprits

Neither Limbaugh, the rest of the media personalities or the candidates are at fault for the hatefulness and bigotry festering in this campaign. It's Americans showing their true colors and hiding behind the fact that it's part of the political process. It is these same Americans who are blaming everyone else for what's wrong with this country instead of looking at the fact that since the "God" president took a throne as leader of our autocracy, through dishonest complicity with the three branches of government, conditions have gone steadily downhill.
Is this God's real punishment for our complicity in this sham of a dmocracy?

Rush Limbaugh has 13 million listeners? Roseanne had more viewers when her show was canceled. Is that where the voters are? 13 million voters may be a tie-breaker, but it’s hardly a campaign-making “silent majority.” I think Rush’s influence is long past its prime and unworthy of mention except in passing in some larger context.

Kerry- as he did in 2004- Needs to Stop Adopting What the Right Gives Him

John Kerry, God bless him, must have this thing for right-wing punditry making it larger and more significant than it is.

Back in 2004 Kerry was using the term 'Islamo-Fascist' a term cooked up in the bowels of Fox News/Right WIng Radio/KArl Rove's office. The term is pure oxymoron and a sales ad for those not astute enough to scratch beneath the surface.

Now he unfortunately gives creedence to Rush the Blowhard when it's questionable and impossible to know what impact he could have had- especially when he flip-flops after Obama wins NC.

It's important not to be one's own worst enemy.

Lush Limberger is getting far more attention (including this rant) than he deserves. The most significant thing about him is that about 13.5 MILLION (for Pete's sake) knuckleheads waste their time listing to his flatulence. It's even worse that most of them actually believe he's anything but an intellectually impaired loudmouth with a messiah complex, and dote on his every word. Way back when Earnie Kovacs had his show, he portrayed a character he called Percy Dovetonsils. This character was shown in the comic light only an Earnie Kovacs could bring off. We need something like this for Limpmember and O'Liely while we're at it.

That's where I part company with this article.

Alternet plays into the Limbaugh fantasy as much as anyone else in the media. If no one covered Rush, he'd die aborning.

Bush Operative Pushes Voter-ID Law

By Jason Leopold
The Public Record
May 14, 2008

A senior legal adviser to the Bush-Cheney 2004 reelection campaign is working behind the scenes to help enact a Missouri state constitutional amendment that critics say would suppress the vote in the key battleground state this November by requiring voters to show proof of citizenship.

Mark “Thor” Hearne, Bush-Cheney’s national counsel in 2004 and now a partner in the St. Louis, Missouri, firm of Lathrop & Gage, has been collaborating with Missouri’s Republican state Rep. Stanley Cox, the sponsor of the constitutional amendment, Cox’s office confirmed this week.
