How Important Is a Fair Election in November? How Important Is AlterNet to You?

AlterNet is stepping up to help make sure elections are fair and all votes are counted in November. But we need your help.

How important is a fair election in November? How important is AlterNet to You?

If you are like me, you are looking forward to the election in November to help change our country. I, personally, feel desperate for new approaches because there are so many things wrong with how we treat our people, and how we behave across the globe. I bet you do too.

But as we know, bad things can happen on Election Day. Remember Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004? The failures in our "democratic" system made me so furious. They made millions of us angry. And frankly we felt impotent, too.

AlterNet in Action

So AlterNet decided to do something about it. We assigned our crack reporter Steve Rosenfeld to closely cover the voting process in the presidential primaries. Steve has been in Nevada, South Carolina, California, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and more. He exposed many of the new shenanigans that the enemies of democracy employ.

Hundreds of thousands of voters and experts read Steve's reporting on AlterNet. Steve knows about election issues as well as anyone reporting in America today. His work is very important and must continue right through Election Day, with your help.

The dirty secret is that some candidates do better when fewer people vote, so their strategy is to make it as hard as possible ... so people get discouraged. We call that voter repression. We can't let that happen. We want everyone who is eligible to vote. This is America after all. Please work with us.

Indispensable Voter Handbook

We've taken what Steve has learned, along with the lessons of the nation's voter registration groups and turned it into an indispensable voter handbook. We are calling it "Count My Vote".

"Count My Vote" is for everyone who will be registering voters or working on campaigns, or who wants to vote and has questions. The book is jam-packed with everything people need to know about each state's voting rules, voter ID laws, new voting machines and what to do if you move, and it has special sections for students and seniors and much more. But most importantly, it helps the voter have confidence that they can handle any problems they face in voting.

Here is where we need your support the most. The handbook is less than a week from going to the printer. Will you help us print enough copies of the book to get it into the hands of people who need it the most? We are working with organizations that want to register 750,000 new voters between now and the fall. We want to give copies to the people registering all these new voters.

For every $40 we raise, we can get eight books into the field to empower voters and help protect them from what we know will inevitably happen. And if you give us $40 (or more of course!) we'll send you a copy for free. (The cover price for book stores will be $9.95) Click here if you will help us.

You, the Citizen Publisher

In publishing this AlterNet Handbook primarily with reader support, we are trying something brand-new. If you give us $10 or more, we will list you in the book as a citizen publisher. You can be anonymous, if you wish.

So far, reader support has been fabulous. More than 600 readers have become citizen publishers. But we need to reach 1,000 to get enough books distributed to make a dent. Can we count on you?

AlterNet asks you for support each season. This is our spring campaign, and we wanted to highlight this crucial issue of voting integrity and really test out citizen publishing.

Your financial support will help us get "Count My Vote" distributed widely. It supports our work in covering the elections. We pledge to relentlessly keep the spotlight on any attempts to twist the rules, and to spread the word, far and wide.

We are on the verge of success. We are pushing hard to make the printer deadline and get the books in to the field by the second week of July. The season for voter registration drives is the summer, continuing through September. With your help we will do that. And what the heck, become a citizen publisher. Have you ever done that before?

We, the people, should be the ones paying for the election. Not 'matching' or whatever, each candidate gets X and that's it.

Lets start with campaign financing (either one kitty or ONLY actual voters can contribute), then go to One day Primary election day with ALL candidates availabe for consideration By ALL States. This is Not American Idol this is a Democracy.this porocess of elimiation due to lack of funds and MSM 'Hand Picked' eligible candidates Must End!The nomiating process should also be limited to no more than 6 months.Requiring we stick to the issues and not waste time on BS 'kneejerk'distractions.
And Lying about oneself's record or an Opponents immediately disqualifies you.Have a group like the league of women votes monitor all speeches & Ads for legitiamcy/validity. Granted it's 'not mean if it's the Truth' but it must be the Truth, portrayed accurately.Lies on the Campaign trail leads to lies in Office. That is NOT a Public Service, it's Self Promotion through propaganda.Mis informing the Citizens about stances and records comes do to Treason- They are working against US and Our Right to Govern and direct the path we will go. If they must lie to get into office, they do not deserve the Office - Just like lying on your resume or about another contender- Reasons for dismissal and termination of eligiblity. They must abid by the same rules which are implemeted in any Hiring/Job situtation, which we must adhere too!

AlterNet's campaigns requiring donations would do better if it did not employ a collection agency that blocks simple Visa transfers from out here where there be dragons. If virtually all other collection systems, even in America where parochialism is ubiquitous, can manage this (compare the ultra-smooth Amazon.com operation or even small hotels which can manage it OK) then why can't AlterNet? I've been in touch with AlterNet and they offer alternatives including the abominable PayPal or international phone calls, and say they are trying to fix the problem at the technical level, but the simplest way would probably be to sack the current agency and ask someone like Amazon.com or virtually any US travel agent or other small business trading outside North America how they manage to collect international transfers by Visa and Mastercard.

Votes Don't Count
Posted by: pdxstudent on Jun 9, 2008 6:11 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
It's plainly clear as night and day that if you don't vote Democratic or Republican, your votes don't count. Within either party, the same has been true of how candidates get nominated. I didn't get to vote for Kucinich, who was forced out of the race early, but a vote for him would have been as good as not-voting. There will be no fair election this fall, because there isn't any real choice of candidates. There never has been either.

Our plurality method of voting, sometimes called first-past-the-pole, is the biggest block to political representation today. I mean, what does it matter if Obama or McCain's votes get counted correctly if the only "correct" way to vote is for either Obama or McCain? Neither candidate seems interested in changing this system either. After all, it is what will get them into office. Why should the American people be concerned with changing it though? The plurality vote makes it so much easier to decide who to vote for in November, because you don't have to (and really can't) decide for yourself. In other words, our method of voting ensures contentment and easy-thinking, not democratic self-government. Politics should never be easy, nor should political decisions be handed to you, whether it be by the media, a loved-one or the very voting system you use.

As far as "solutions" go, everyone should be advocating and voting for advocates of condorcet methods or instant runoff voting. I would vote for John McCain without a second thought given to it if I knew that the next time around everyone would be voting with one of those alternative methods. There are few, if any political issues more important than this, because what the fuck does it mean to fight for other political issues in a system in which there is a "correct" way to vote?

Why Can't Americans Use a Simple System? The Voter Puts a Cross On a Paper With a Pencil ...
Posted by: opmoc on Jun 9, 2008 7:33 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
For the person he is voting for.

Trustworthy people hand count all the ballot papers and scrutineers ensure the process is accurate and not corrupted.

This system is used throughout the World...

But not in America

In America voting machines are used.

Its a complete farce.

Why bother to vote when the result can be so easily corrupted?

Aren't there enough trustworthy people in America to hand count ballot papers?

I simply do not understand why Americans still use voting machines - when the history of their use is so clearly corrupt.

You cant beat a piece of paper and a pencil.

There is a hard record that can't be faked.

If there is any dispute - you simply recount the papers.

No computers are required - and the process can be very quick if it is well organised.

Nader and other 3rd party candidates are screwed
Posted by: warble on Jun 9, 2008 8:14 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I went to the Gay Pride Parade yesterday in Philadelphia to get Ralph Nader put on the Ballot so that he could appear on the Ballot in Pennsylvania. 90% of the people I approached had their minds made up that Obama was their man and Nader was a spoiler...meaning that in 2000 he caused Gore to lose the election by taking away votes from him.

I remember distinctly in 2000 hearing that Gore had won that election by all the newscasters. Then, somewhere past midnight, Fox challenged the vote and said GW Bush won. Well, that never happened in history. Then, if that was not bad enough, the recount was a regular farce. Thousands of people who voted had their chads rechecked to make sure. Finally, the supreme court went and said Bush won. Later, the Secretary of Florida was credited with removing thousands of black voters from the rolls and the state was embroiled in so many controversy regarding voting fraud that it is generally regarded that Bush stole the election. Still, the people have it in their mind that because of Nader, we have Bush. The only reason that view is fixed in everyone's mind is because the media is controlled by the corporations. But most of all, Gore himself did not mount a defense and slithered away to the great dismay of millions. To say that Nader was the cause of Bush and not corruption is outlandish. Most of all, were there not other 3rd party candidates that took votes away from poor Gore?

In 2004, More crazy business went on in several states and the idea that this monster, George Bush won, is even today the subject of wide debate.

In 2006, the Republican Party was no more and the congress went over to the Democrats on meaningless promises. They promised to Impeach Bush. That was taken off the table the day after. They promised to stop corruption and earmarks, Today, they have quadrupled. They promsised to stop the war...that's a joke. They promised so many things and still haven't kept their promises. Now, they are going for change? It is a joke.

It is not an even playing field for third party candidates and in Pennsylvania, the hurdles placed are unconstitutional and almost impossible. This is what passes for Democracy. Our country has been screwed by the two parties and the rule of law and our constitution vanquished. You guys better learn how to find a deep hole and hide.

The press, the rules, and the two party system are a dictatorship of the Corporations. Get used to it.

You're kidding, right?

Btw, 2004 was stolen in at least 15 states, your gatekeeping on 9/11 and your obvious partisan support for Sen. Obama make this site a joke for any thinking progressive.

Time to rename it AlterNOT, if you want to be honest.

By all means, keep begging for money in a collapsing economy and ignoring or marginalizing the most important stories and issues in North America today.

Why not just ask your foundation sponsors for a bit more cash, eh?

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

Those are the most likely sources of "foundational support" for the 911 Truthiness Movement, which is a false-flag PR operation. Bush did have forewarning of terrorist attacks, and he did nothing to prevent them. That's the dirty fact that the Republicans tried to hide by inventing a "bombs in the WTC" scenario - they attempted to ASSOCIATE the real fact of Bush's foreknowledge and failure to act (Aug 6th PDB, right?) with ludicrous nonsense about bombs in the WTC. Standard crisis management PR crap.

See http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/08/29/18444559.php, for example.

However, sending a reporter around to "monitor the voting" is not going to work either - but at least there is some decent coverage here. As evidence, see http://www.alternet.org/democracy/71608/

"Rep. Rush Holt to Push for Paper Ballots and Vote Count Audits for 2008 - By Steven Rosenfeld, AlterNet. Posted December 27, 2007."

So, that's decent journalism - but where is the follow up? Where is the bill now? (http://holt.house.gov/voting.shtml)

Since then, no stories on the issue, but a whole lot on the "Clinton-Obama" controversy - even though they are practically identical in terms of their policy. The press is refusing to do their job - no coverage or discussion of Iraq, no discussion of the public's desire for a national health care system along British lines, no discussion of the many impeachable crimes of BushCo, no discussion of getting off fossil fuels and onto renewable energy, no discussion of the massive, massive financial fraud that led to the loan-debt bubble - just blah, blah, blah.

If you want to give money away, give it to whoever you want to - but also consider the Center for Media and Democracy (PR Watch, SourceWatch, Lobbywatch), the Center for Responsive Politics (OpenSecrets.org) and the interesting new news channel, the Real News Network. The first two provide critical resources for the public - see http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/index.php

One other thing:
It's pretty easy to provide a secure voting system.
Posted by: thoughtcriminal on Dec 27, 2007 1:55 PM

Optical scanners are widely used to score all kinds of tests, and they work just fine. The basic rules for using optical scanners to count paper ballots are as follows:

1) Open source software and non-proprietary equipment are required, so that anyone can examine the system for fraud potential. That means making sure the microprocessor isn't swapped out - gambling casinos can tell you how to do that.

2) No connections to the internet or phone lines should be allowed. Rather, the vote count should be transcribed onto some media (CD) and transported by courier to statewide voting headquarters. Another, duplicate CD should remain locked in the machine. The paper ballots should be stored securely at each precinct in case a recount is needed.

3) Random audits of paper ballots need to be carried out in different precincts.

4) Post-election voting polls should be carried out and compared to the results. If there is a big discrepancy (as in the case of the fraudulent 2000 election) then a complete audit should be carried out.

Finally, none of that matters if the voting rolls themselves are rigged in order to keep people from voting. Further measures and enforcement are needed to ensure that doesn't take place..."

Personally, I would vote, but I would have little confidence in the honesty of the corrupt election officials and private corporations that are now charged with counting the votes.

1) Remove Dead people from voter registers list. They are dead and should no longer vote.
2) Remove convicted felons from voter registers list. They forfited thier right to vote when they commited thier crime.
3) Insist on vaild ID's for all voters. Lets make sure this voter is actually the person they are claiming to be. Two years ago someone voted for me before I got the voting booth. I sure hope they voted as I would have.
4) Institute a nationwide voter data base to monitor voters and keep them from registering in more than one state at a time.

Lets end voter fraud.

We present evidence supporting the hypothesis that systematic attempts are being made to manipulate the results of the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination contest, through overt means such as crossover voting by non-Democrats, and through covert means targeted at the electronic vote tabulation process itself. The net effect has been to prolong the nomination battle and sharpen its negativity, thereby boosting the prospects of the Republican nominee and making more plausible his "victory" in November-either by an honest count, or through continued exploitation of the proven security vulnerabilities in American voting systems.

"Our examination includes the Democratic primaries in the following key states: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, each of which had surprising and unexpected results. In each of these critical elections there was a significant pro-Clinton disparity when comparing pre-election surveys and Election Day exit polls against the official vote counts.

Smoke and pipe dreams. Here is a little something I wrote in 1965 when I first learned that there was no such thing as a private Conscience:

Done Fell Through Baby

HERE’S TO OLD GLORY
A POEM SO GOREY
EXCEEDINGLY CORSE AND MEAN,
AS TO OPEN YOUR PORTS
AND DROP YOUR SHORTS
AND PASS THE VASELINE!

WE OFFER OUR PATRIOTS
OUR WHISPERING SACERDOTES
TO SQUANDERING BLOODY WAR,
WHILE THE HORNED BITCH
OUT ON THE BEACH
DECRY’S I’M NOT A WHORE!

SO THINK YOUR THOUGHTS
