Not everyone in the Times building is on the same page when it comes to Judy Miller. The official story the paper is sticking to is that Miller is a heroic martyr, sacrificing her freedom in the name of journalistic integrity.

But a very different scenario is being floated in the halls. Here it is: It's July 6, 2003, and Joe Wilson's now famous op-ed piece appears in the Times, raising the idea that the Bush administration has "manipulate[d]" and "twisted" intelligence "to exaggerate the Iraqi threat." Miller, who has been pushing this manipulated, twisted, and exaggerated intel in the Times for months, goes ballistic. Someone is using the pages of her own paper to call into question the justification for the war -- and, indirectly, much of her reporting. The idea that intelligence was being fixed goes to the heart of Miller's credibility. So she calls her friends in the intelligence community and asks, Who is this guy? She finds out he's married to a CIA agent. She then passes on the info about Mrs. Wilson to Scooter Libby (Newsday has identified a meeting Miller had on July 8 in Washington with an "unnamed government official"). Maybe Miller tells Rove too -- or Libby does. The White House hatchet men turn around and tell Novak and Cooper. The story gets out.

This is why Miller doesn't want to reveal her "source" at the White House -- because she was the source. Sure, she first got the info from someone else, and the odds are she wasn't the only one who clued in Libby and/or Rove (the State Dept. memo likely played a role too)... but, in this scenario, Miller certainly wasn't an innocent writer caught up in the whirl of history. She had a starring role in it. This also explains why Miller never wrote a story about Plame, because her goal wasn't to write a story, but to get out the story that cast doubts on Wilson's motives. Which Novak did.

This version of events has divided the Times into two camps: those who want to learn everything about this story, and those who want to learn everything as long as it doesn't downgrade the heroic status of their "colleague" Judy Miller. And then there are the schizophrenics. Frank Rich is spending his summer in the second camp, while at the same time writing some of the most powerful and brilliant stuff about the scandal: "This case is about Iraq, not Niger. The real victims are the American people, not the Wilsons. The real culprit...is not Mr. Rove but the gang that sent American sons and daughters to war on trumped up grounds... That's why the stakes are so high: this scandal is about the unmasking of an ill-conceived war."

But this unmasking -- if it is to be complete -- has to include Judy Miller and the part she played in the mess in Iraq. Of course, the division over Miller is nothing new... it predates her transformation into media martyr by many months. For an early look at this rift, check out Howard Kurtz' May 2003 reporting on the way Miller ferociously fought to keep Ahmad Chalabi, her top source on WMD, to herself and the anger it caused at the paper. And also the paper's extraordinary mea culpa from May 2004, in which its editors admitted that the Times' reporting on Iraq "was not as rigorous as it should have been" -- yet steadfastly refused to even mention the less-than-rigorous reporter whose byline appeared on 4 of the 6 stories the editors singled out as being particularly egregious. "It looks," the Times' public admission concluded, "as if we, along with the administration, were taken in." And yet just two months earlier, Times Executive Editor Bill Keller called Miller, who was one of the main reporters "taken in," a "smart, well-sourced, industrious and fearless reporter." Nothing about her less than "rigorous" reporting. Nothing about her reliance on Chalabi being less than "well-sourced."

And so can disease be painful. The difference is the former heals in time. The latter kills unless it is rooted out.

This piece digs deep, and time, as always, will tell.

Credentials? Wilson's credentials look a whole lot better than yours. He's defending himself and his wife publicly. You got a track record on this site, baby. Your comments are gross opportunism hidden behind anonymity.

Plame in flames is mainly What's the Game. (Joe Wilson who?)

Thx for asking Who WANTS the truth, rather than disputing Who CAN HEAR it.

Motive speculations in this affair, (what can 'get' Miller, 'get' the NY Times, 'get' Libby and Rover, e.g.), seem hollow. Guess-comments explain some aspects of the affair and not others. One place, a source with sterling credibility -- Wayne Madsen, offers us a Unified Field Truth (theory?) which explains everything from any aspect.

Saying Plame was outed NOT ONLY to undercut her husband with his proof that the Iraq invasion is lies and war crimes. Any discrediting effect on her husband was an indirect benefit to the Plame removers. (And as far as it goes, outing Plame does seem picayune -- how much heat can Joe Wilson bring on the Fright House anyway, really? -- so the pettiness of the gotcha game mismatched the monstrous war stakes; all in all, an 'unsatisfying' expose, "a limited hangout," in the Nixon stylebook.)

The wider view sees Plame as the direct target, to stop her 'good' CIA investigation into the WMD proliferation of the 'bad' CIA, meaning, in a word: 'Bush.'
At the Madsen link, here's the synopsis:
Plame leak damaged a major CIA investigation linking senior Bush administration officials to WMD proliferation.
U.S. intelligence insiders have pointed out that the White House is using "Rovegate" and "Who in the White House said what to whom?" as a smoke screen to divert attention away from the actual counter-proliferation work Mrs. Wilson and her Brewster Jennings & Associates team were engaged in.
The arrival of Timothy Flanigan as Patrick J. Fitzgerald's boss is likely related to the mountains of evidence Fitzgerald has now collected to indict senior White House officials, particularly, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, for criminal conspiracy in exposing a sensitive U.S. intelligence operation that was targeting some of their closest political and business associates.

Getting a view of a 'bad' CIA is, indeed, NOT what some of us "...Want to Know." For those of us who DO, and would grasp the truth to demonstrate how it might be handled, there's always the baseline starting knowledge about the inception, mission statement, and fiftysome-year performance of the CIA, open for the reading in the book, The Secret Team, by L. Fletcher Prouty.

Robert D Novak, Heritage Institute board member and columnist has an article in this mornings Chicago Sun Times explaining his innocence of the treasonous outing of a secret agent. We need a pied piper to get the rats out of the news business. Everyone in the world knows that Shock and Awe was a war crime of the first magnitude except the American people. Our president is about to approve Bolton and Roberts while Congress is out of town. How to get away with war crimes? Simply withdraw the country from the International War Crimes Tribunal.

We have 3,000,000 youth in penitentiaries and others having their legs blown off. If we allow this to happen here we are as guilty as they are.

Serious charges

I have problems believing that Judith Miller can be or is directly implicated in the outing of Mrs. Wilson. I do not care about the details of Ambassador Wilson's revelations, I do care about the decay in this nation's sense of honor and respect for all who serve these United States. I have had numerous intelligence agency friends from both the United States and the U.K. All were field operatives and some were undercover for part of their careers. Their risks are beyond even the wildest scenarios of a TV or movie mogul. To put them in the spotlight is treason.

Now I cannot believe Judith Miller is a traitor and certainly I cannot believe the New York Times would ever shield a traitor. So what really gives here?

Here's another angle on Valerie Plame outing herself.
http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2003/10/1/170318.shtml
As NewsMax reported earlier today, Syndicated columnist Robert Novak wrote that the identity of Wilson's wife "was not much of a secret."
Indeed it was not. Besides her name being readily available on the Internet, "Who's Who in America-2003" lists Valerie Elise Plame as Wilson's wife. How "secret" is that?

Supporters of the administration, on and off Capitol Hill, agree that this "scandal" is wholly contrived by the president's opponents.

They are hopeful that the right lessons have been learned when it comes to trusting Clinton Cling-ons and Democratic Party contributors within the administration.

That was my intuition re Miller's "choice" in the matter. It looked too much like a White House Protection Act to me, and it makes even more sense that it was a Judith Miller Protection Act; in any case, it served a dual purpose to play the "ethical reporter." And if she gets away with it, she'll be rewarded by some major appointment.

From Ms. Miller:
"She even compared herself to the president, saying that she was getting the same information he was getting..."

No kidding?! Hmmm. Maybe somebody should ask George what HE knew about Valerie Plame. And when he knew it. And when he ordered...oops...told anyone about it.

In response to the question: Is the jailed Times reporter a heroic martyr or White House stooge?

OH! OH! Pick me! Pick me! (visualize the grade schooler with their hand in the air with the other hand holding up the elbow in an attempt to get it higher in the middle of a classroom)
I KNOW! I KNOW! PICK ME! PICK ME!

Um, the answer is , White House Stooge!

Sorry, I haven't read the article yet. I just had to respond to this question right away. The little schoolboy in me just couldn't resist answering that little question.

Nowhere in this report is there mention of Dr. Kelly's last e-mail to Miller, suggesting "dark forces" at work to destroy him...obviously, a reference to the Mossad/MI6 hit team that "assisted" him in his "suicide."No mention, either, of CIA plant,Brian Lamb, granting Miller carte blanche to spread her WMD lies and promote her "germ" book on C-SPAN.

Dump her!

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
If any of this turns out to have even a scintilla of truth behind it, then I can only say that the journalists who feel any kind of loyalty to Miller, albeit as a fellow journalist or even a personal friend, then they are deeply and seriously misguided. Rather than grieving for her in her "time of need", they should be calling for the scraggly little skank to be indicted for treason.

If we can identify one catalyst, the one vector that has allowed this group of greedy, power driven pukes in the White House to sell their agenda to the electorate (the only process whereby they can legitimize and thereby make it possible to conduct their plans) it is to be found with the members of the media. It is they who have been granted the grave responsibilty to ensure that the American people are not sold a package that enables little Hitlers-to-be to enjoy the fruits of their designs.
This is a serious mandate and an absolute responsibilty.... and one which Miller has apparently used to her own ends. I'm reminded of some little crack-whore would use members of the public's innocent belief that what she said was the truth because they had no reason to suspect otherwise.

No no. Dump her. Let her reap even half of what she has sown.

Mycos

I am deeply saddened that Judith Miller was not on one of the exploding subways in London. Do not misunderstand, I do not want this amoral Zionist shill and traitor dead. I just wished to see her covered from head to toe with blood, brain matter and bone fragments — literally — instead of just figuratively.

If scratching your head why we are in this Iraqi/terrorism mess, consider that majority of informed people around the world have little doubt about that: Israeli partisans control American foreign policy and mass media. Power of this lobby shuts down any debate about the real (and stated by terrorists) cause of 9/11, which is occupation of the West Bank. This in turn was grabbed by the lobby as an opportunity to destroy the most dangerous enemy of Israel - Saddam's Iraq. J. Miller is just one of countless activists. It is not a coincidence that the most active and vicious Iraq - bashers were Jewish: from Wolfowitz, Feith and Perle to Adelman, Brooks and Kristol, to name just a few. This fifth column must be exposed to prevent further damage to our treasure and life. Manipulation of intelligence and public opinion that went into this enterprise is nothing short of treason of historical proportions. Sure there were others involved: primarily imperium-builders/oil securing corporate types and political opportunists like our puppet head. But if somebody wanders how could have apparently civilized Germans attempt a Final Solution - just look how anti-Semitism is born in front of our eyes. To paraphrase somebody: never in the history of the mankind, so many across the world did not suffer so much for so few (lunatic settlers) to gain so little (land and water of the West Bank). Sure, there will be still plenty to deal with, but you cannot make any progress without decisively addressing that glaring injustice.

Dear Ms. Huffington:

You are missing the point! Why would Ms. Miller or Mr. Rove or anyone else KNOW the identity of a CIA agent? While the president certainly has the right to know who works for the CIA, I can't imagine him using a list of agents as light reading. It is vey strange that Ms. Miller would have contacted anyone with that information. Why would Mr. Rove know the identity of an individual CIA agent?

Judith Miller has already been called on her reporting for the New York Times, and surprizingly, she's still in the news. She wants so bad to be up there with Edward R. Murrow as long as it doesn't take time or work. Her little "theatre" fools only the mentally defective. Given that the validity of her material has been called into question before suggests she sort of "shot herself in the foot" as far as credibility goes. With reference to Mr. Wilson, I've seen his article and I've seen the "dossier" (so called) that took Blair fifty one days to cobble together. I'm surprized people didn't catch on to this fraud when US media anounced this "dossier" would be ready in this fifty one day time frame. Generally, one waits until the "product" is in hand before announcing its existence. George will be remembered as a chronic pathological liar, but by god and sonny jesus, he ain't very good at it!!
