Has Faux sunk so low, they just get their anchors all liquored up and then let them spout nonsense at their guests? Klein is exactly right: capitalize on any emergency to push through programs no one with a clear mind would ever agree to. I want to know why none of the lame Dems in Congress have demanded to revisit the energy policy meetings early in the Bush Admin, when Cheney met with oil execs, who crafted the energy policy. Who were they? What was said? What notes were taken? Fuck executive privilege. This is national security we're talking about--hell, even ShrubCo says that about energy. Certainly executive privilege cannot trump national security. Where are the Dems with balls? Where is Paul Wellstone? Oh, yeah. They assassinated him....

I'm so glad Ms Klein is on the same side I'm on. With her looks, brains and verbal skills, the idiots who don't agree don't have a chance.

What Would Shill O'Reilly Have Done?

Well, it's typical Fox Newstwister Cesspool behavior, especially on the part of the male stooge in the clip. He was lying through his teeth about the drilling relieving the shortage in a year or so. The experts everywhere say it will be ten years before it relieves the shortage of fuel, irrespective of their politics. Naomi is right in her rejoinder.

Had it been Shill O'Reilly, he would have done a better job of in-your-face shouting and in his infantile way cut off the guest's microphone when, as here with Naomi, the guest is clearly winning the points.

I just spent a week in Helsinki. When you go into the two large bookstores downtown, you are greeted at the front of the store by two large displays featuring the books in both English and Finnish of Noam Chomsky and Naomi Klein. By demonstrating my familiarity with and general approval of the positions of those two, I was able to avoid, among our friends' acquaintances, having to use my first new words in Finnish, Oh no, we're Canadian.

"Wellstone's death was a loss, but he wasn't assassinated."

Votingvet, you state so matter of factly,"..he wasn't assassinated."

With all due respect how do you know that Wellstone wasn't assassinated?

Credible sources have shown that he and the Missouri Dem. congress member were quite likely "lost" by the same method of assassination, close to the same time, by the same people, for the same reason.

I'm attempting to assist some young students connect real U.S. history and current events.

Thanks.

I'm surprised that Fox Noise let Ms. Klein get away with that much. Their censors must have been on a coffee break. The Fox boys rarely let out that much objectivity at one time. Makes you worry about the future!

The is no intent to actually invest in alternative energy sources by these Drill mongers- if there were they would have already invested decades ago after the first 'Oil Crisis'. They are only trying to assure future oil profits and power.
My question for the Dumbass from FOX would be 'Do you have Children, neices/nephews. What conditions do you think they will face in the future?'The oil industry will NOT change because they didn't the last time, nor do they care anything about the future of Humankind.
The Oil industry has land leases already and have refused to use them, the Corp Whores in Congress have just shot down a 'Use it or Lose it' bill forcing them to utilize these lands. They have no interest in bringing down prices (profits). Thus these long held leases should be terminated, and Criminal prosectuions should begin against all Persons who have used this resource to cause the economic, political and environmental crisis' which we currently face.Treason, Crimes Against Humanity and War crimes against the past & present Public Servants, CEO's,CFO's and Board members of the Oil and Auto industry, 30 yrs of these High crimes must be brought to justice!

Remember the TV news shows are shows -- entertainment-- not informative. The more they race to the bottom , the more they are supposed to be entertaining. It is really disgusting to watch.I hope Naomi does not make a habit of appearing on main stream TV it can dilute her message.

It doesn't surprise me that Faux done that, but Naomi is a gatekeeper, for who is really at charge, and why things are as they are go to http://www.searchles.com/channels/show/4578 and see. They probably don't want alternative energy, but even if they did, they can't. "Lindsey Williams talks about his first hand knowledge of Alaskan oil reserves larger than any on earth. And he talks about how the oil companies and U.S. government won't send it through the pipeline for U.S. citizens to use. Recorded October 2007!"

World Bankers will not allow this to happen. Develop new sources, what about the 4 guys that perfected the Joe Cell? All dead now, but evidence that it can work, and people attempting to recreate it. Then along comes 1 guy, he remains a secret, has been driving his 78 Camaro on water for quite some time. Same combustible engine, more horsepower, and very little water. And yet they twll us how they want to make Hydrogen pumps, Why? There are so much more that is supressed, yet findable, all one has to do is search.

People went to prison, murdered, silenced, bought out...we've had several options for many years.

would make a cute couple. (Not sure either one is single, no offense to significant others!)

Sorry, that's about as engaged as I can muster these days, the whole world done gone crazy. It's a little difficult to care about saving the world or the oceans or ANWAR when there's an entropic tsunami on the horizon.

I'm just glad I didn't procreate this lifetime, it must be hell for people with kids. "Sorry Johnny and Judy, they warned us that things were going to get ugly back in the 60's but we didn't believe them and now here you are. Good night and good luck."

Naomi is great, Fox is absurd.

First, Naomi has some great stuff...especially the parts about capitalism being a threat to democracy. This is clear to anyone who pays attention.
Watch from about 2:30-3:30 for a HUGE contradiction on the part of the "oil dude." It is about long- versus short-term solutions. Naomi talks about the need for long-term energy solutions. She is then asked about what to do in the short term for the economy. Before she can open her mouth about opening up the reserves, "oil dude" gets upset that she's not talking about long-term energy solutions! Naomi is very well-controlled to not call him out for being a complete tool.
BTW, who are those laughing white men behind Naomi?

Good on Naomi for telling it like it is. She is one of the most astute thinkers and commentators of our time.

That a sweet young thing has come along and written a book about the obvious - to say nothing of thirty five years old.

Before Naomi was born (probably - 1973), I said all this in a then infamous symposium speech. I wrote about it for years. I've been writing it on my website, and I alluded to it in a novel I wrote several years ago. "Bugaboo and Disaster Finance," as I called it has been the baxic tactical doctrine of the military

industrial complex since the beginning. Everytime they need a big dollop of the taxpayers money, the Soviets developed a new wonder weapon or became a threat to dominate the world by appearing in some little country. Et cetera.

The gullibility of the U.S. public beggars further description.

Ms Klein's theory of "Disaster Capitalism" is a compelling one. Beyond that, many people have argued that we have moved toward a system of corporatism, or economically speaking, fascism.

Does "Reichstag Fire" ring a bell in this context?

The limits of Naomi Klein as a progressive poster girl
Posted by: red maple on Jul 21, 2008 1:41 PM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) is said to have expressed regret that he named his movement, his party and his government "fascist" in a poor attempt to associate his regime with the alleged glories of the ancient Roman Empire.

Words that may admittedly be apocryphal, but that are nonetheless often attributed to him, declare that a better name might have been "corporatism," since his Italian experiment uniquely melded the economic power of capitalism with the political authority of the state (and, he might have added, the moral sanction of the Catholic Church).

It is arguable that "Il Duce's" vision might now be upon us, duly augmented with contemporary "information technology" to facilitate ideological support for the political economy of corporatism.

And, into this precarious situation steps Naomi Klein. She is, indeed, a fine poster girl for those who seek to comprehend the causes and consequences of globalization, disaster capitalism and whatever this ongoing process of political oppression, economic exploitation and, increasingly, environmental degradtion may be called later on in this century.

At times, however, I lament the "Gee Whiz" reactions of young, progressive people who have plainly just now come upon her (and others') insights. I truly hope that these revelations will not appear as "eureka" moments only, to be suspended when inevitable disappointments (e.g., the failure of political will on the part of congressional Democrats, Senator Obama's ongoing drift to the centre, etc.) follow.

There is a vast literature on the emergence of capitalism > imperialism > globalization > hegemonic technological empires that, I fear, is being neglected by many who seek to understand the world as a necessary precondition for changing it.

Canada's beloved conservative critic, George Grant, once put it well: "moral indignation," he intoned, "is far too valuable a commodity to be put in the service of anything but reality." A profound sympathizer with the "new left" in the 1960s, Grant inspired a generation of Canadian students to oppose imperialism, but only on the basis of a thorough political and philosophical analysis, and not simply as a reflexive rejection based on the sort of moral outrage that can, when evil persists, easily decend into nihilism.

I find it hard to believe that there appears to be no one willing to start putting the cross hairs on all these bastards.

"we need names and addresses. Name names."

Once they all start fearing for their safety and security, as the population at large, (not from the alleged terrorists ethier), then oil won't mean so much.
Those that induge by taking on an oil career, even in the lower rank and files, are all complicent and in denial of the impact of their indulgence. Perpetuation of the fascist Coup is not televised. Yet the evidents are all there.

Whether intentional or not the out come is predictable. Therefore it is a result of intentions set forth and fingers can be pointed to the culpRats.

We need Batman.

Why don't the oil companies uncap some of the over 1000 wells they have already drilled on public land. They want all of the oil under there control. Drilling more wells will do nothing as long as they can hold countries hostage for oil. Why didn't the government drill on the public land instead of giving it to the oil companies for nothing. A Federal oil company would make jobs and make the Big oil more competative. Bought and paid for government, thats what capitolism has gotten us.
