Women soldiers face more than just the "typical" horrors of war, they have to contend with harassment, assault, and sometimes rape -- from those in uniform. The military, many say, is unhelpful when women attempt to report their experiences.

In the Democracy Now! clips to the right, Columbia U Prof Helen Benedict discusses her work with the increasing numbers of women in the military and the astonishingly high rate of assault and harassment, Eli Painted Crow, a 22-year vet talks about her time in Iraq and, in one of the more disturbing parts, Janis Karpinski reveals that General Sanchez ordered that dehydration deaths of frightened female soldiers were not to be labeled as such...

Democrats and Republicans alike fall over themselves praising our 'brave' soldiers, but we never hear anything about our brave women soldiers who not only face the same dangers as the men, but who have to attempt to protect themselves from their own Army brothers in arms. I can't help thinking...that these guys are coming home to a hero's welcome? Is this something we will have to worry about when they come home?

The Military Runs On Rape

Rape (and harassment and torture) are necessary to the continued unquestioned operation of the US and other militaries. In fact, the patriarchs teach sex that is not different from sexual assault. To exacerbate and escalate the feeling of fear of other males that pervades boy's lives (homophobia), sexual assault (and threat of same) is encouraged. The military and other all-male environments turn a blind eye to male-on-male sexual assault. (With Don't Ask, Don't Tell, service personnel are punished much more stringently for KISSING another man than for RAPING him.) Before women were allowed into the US military, males sexually assaulted other males (some continue to do so). Now US servicemen are raping women as well. As a society we have excused, ignored, and even defended males hurting females and other males. Boys will be boys and all that. The next time a nice lefty feels the need to reassure everyone endlessly that "They support the troops too," they should be induced to admit that their stance implicitly supports rape, torture, and murder committed by US servicemen. And the next time another rightwinger begins to froth and lie as they wrap themselves in the flag and cross, demand of them do they unquestioningly support rape, torture and murder committed in their name. Ask all men: Do you care? What are you doing to end the abuse committed by our brothers, sons, fathers? What are you doing to end the war(s), in Iraq and here at home?

Videos don't work too good

The videos don't work too well if you are using an ad blocker, like FlashBlock in Firefox. Normally, flash videos give me a button to click on to run them. Here, you guys have some Javascript that detects that I'm blocking some flash, and instead of letting me watch the video, asks me to get Flash.

Why do people override default web browser behavior? If I didn't have flash installed, and needed it for your video, my browser would tell me in its own way (which is better than yours, since it would find the plug-in and allow me to install with one click).

For those of you who have not heard of Kay Griggs. Please take the time to acquaint yourselves with this remarkable patriot. She explains in her 8 hour video interview why we have scandals like "Operation Tailhook" and other sexually motivated events occurring in our courts, military and government these days.
Here is the first half on google video. Paste the two sections together to bypass the alternet "problem" with word over 30 characters. And a big THANK YOU to Kay Griggs.

Empty the trash bin or swat at the flies

This is all the more reason to dismantle the Amerikaan military institution(s) and start over. You can either take out the trash or swat at the flies. As long as you have even one vestige of a military system that creates this kind of crap, you'll end up with flies.

But 'Merikaans are like the pathetic smoker who won't quit (yeah, I'm an ex-smoker so I know what I'm talking about). "Oh, no, we need soliders, we need to have the military just like it is right now, it's just a few bad apples, just a few bad boys raping their female comrades... we can't quit now, the terrists will win... boohoooo. COWARDS!

We need a new bushido with warriors that work for the 21st century not the same old victorian era bullshit mindless soldiering of yesteryear. Until you have the guts to throw out the crap, you'll keep dealin' with the stink.

You sure can tell you are a marine. I hope your example isn't the norm. The mindset is sickening...

I agree with Lynniegolon. And I would just add that one can slam the MSM for deficient, dishonest, etc., etc., reporting and commentary on Iraq and a raft of other issues, but you have to give them credit on one score. They are not in the habit of publishing this sort of foul c__p. One of the (albeit very minor) drawbacks of the alternative media.

Try thinking about our current military (as per following set foreign policy, strategy, cultural mores, systematization) in terms of the blueprint provided by Nero's Rome, and everything should fall quite nicely into place for you.
