Wanna know why viewers of The Daily Show (and I'll just make the unscientific corollary that this extends to Colbert watchers) are among the most well-informed?

Simple. When your show's currency is laughter, pointing out the idiocy of idiocy is your lifeblood.

As opposed to the sad state of most corporate journalism, whose mandate requires another "side" from some self-interested, oft-proved-wrong-in-the-past ideologue who's given the opportunity to bore you with half-truths and trumped up statistics from coin-operated think tanks.

Here, Colbert unearths the idiotic logic to the president's healthcare proposal (video right)

Stephen Colbert: What made [Tuesday's State of the Union speech] so groundbreaking, I think, was all the new stuff we've never heard from the president before...like a domestic agenda. Take his proposal to fix the whole health care mess with the only proven cure-all: tax breaks...

Bush clip: And for the millions of Americans with no health insurance at all, this deduction would help put a basic private health insurance plan within reach.

Colbert: It's so simple. Most people who couldn't afford health insurance also are too poor to owe taxes. But...if you give them a deduction from their taxes they don't owe, they can use the money they're not getting back from what they haven't given to buy the health care they can't afford.

I want to hear those words said out loud in congress and by any presidential candidate that wants my support. Edwards has it now, but if any viable candidate wants to take it, what they have to do is very simple. Just say these words: "I support a single payer health care plan that covers every American citizen." Asking me for time, money, or anything but contempt before that is a waste of time.

The Logic of Colbert's is Sooo TRUE . Yes lets make a tax deduction of 15,000 available to those with incomes below the POVERTY level .
They also get to do there favorite thing SCREW the Middle Class . Now your Employer provided Health Insurance becomes taxable income . Nothing so galls a Republican President as the idea that some middle income guy is NOT paying Taxes on ALL his Income . Reagan added 50% of Social Security Benefits to your taxable income and in a stroke of particularly meaness made Unemployment Benefits taxable . Yes lose your job , lose your Health Insurance and get an Unemployment Benefit that doesn't come close to replacing your income and NOW we will make pay taxes on THAT . Talk about kicking a man when he's down !!
I seem to remeber a proposal a while back to include as Taxable income the value of tickets / upgrades purchased with Frequent Flier miles , Many of these miles were racked up on business trips and yet are given to the individual flyer .
Nothing ever came of it . Could the reason be perhaps that it was a perk for the higher paid unlike Unemployment pay OR as the President likes to say " the haves and the have mores "
