Keith Ellison (D-MN), America's first Muslim congressman, prefers to be sworn into office with a Koran and not a Bible.

Fancy that.

Threatened by this news, Rep Virgil Goode (R-VA) warned his constituents: "I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States" if we do not adopt "strict immigration policies."

Never mind the fact that Ellison's family's been in America since the mid-18th Century, "I'm about as American as they come," he tells CNN in the clip, right. I was under the impression that it was as more about who you are than where you're from. But point taken.

Goode, totally unrepentant, said that as long as he represents his district there'll be none a them filthy Korans on his walls. Only it sounded slightly more ante-bellum and genteel than that.

Ellison's response ought to put any Christian allied with Goode to shame.

Digg!

... no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

Goode needs a refresher course on the Constitution.

How strong an oath?

What good would it do to have someone swear an oath on something he doesn't believe in? Just how strong of an oath would it be? I mean, if he's swearing on a bible and if he sees the bible as merely a book of fiction, isn't that sort of the same idea as crossing one's fingers when making a promise?

Okay, okay, so many people make oaths they don't mean all the time (Bush is a case in point), but perhaps it doesn't mean anything to them because the book they swear on really doesn't mean anything to them. Perhaps if this man is truly a believer in the Koran, if he swears on the Koran, he might be more likely to keep his oath than if he swears on what, to him, might just be another popular novel like something by Stephen King or John Grisham.

Another sick, insecure, racist and fascist Republican, using fear-mongering to further his racist political agenda.

Mr. Vigil Goode! You’re evil through and through and it is beasts like you who are bound to destroy America and make this world less safer for everyone. In my book, I am adding your ugly name as one of the enemies of freedom, democracy and humanity. You don’t belong to the twenty first century; you belong to the stone age! And it is really sad and very uncomforting that I live in the same land and time as a sick beast like you!

"I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States" if we do not adopt "strict immigration policies."

WTF??? This is despicable. This kind of rhetoric is sick, despicable and totally unconscionable especially in these times. He should be admonished.

Muslim Dem out-graces Christian Rep...

Calling a man evil and sick and fear mongering because he states his beliefs (whether you agree with him or not) is not going to get him to leave his office, it is not going to change his beliefs, it IS buying into his divisive rhetoric and getting the progressive movement absolutely nowhere. Let's follow Ellison's example and not Goode's.

It is ignorant backwards cromagnums like this, who ruin America today.

On one hand they think all Moslems are perpetrators of terroristic activities and keep giving speeches that Moslems join the so called "Moderate peoples" and "mainstream". Yet when one comes along they pee in their collective pants like this coward.

Fact is this guy is so intolerant, yet so incredibly ignorant the , he mixes muslim immigration as threat to the country, when he's intimidated by a US citizen who was born here..

Hey Mr. Airhead, don't mean to shock you but the gentleman you are so intimidated by is born and raised in the good old U.S.

Oh, sorry I forgot he's not just Moslem, but black too. Whewwww, can't somebody padlock this GOP headquarters? What an idiot. Most Republicans play to the lowest common denominator in their base...

What a pervert! I wonder what he's sexual preference is even though he may have kids and a wife? Bleeping hypocrite!

Both sides are completely out of touch one this one.

For Virgil Goode to act the US is a "Christian" country is ludicrous. The majority of the founding fathers were Deists, not Christians...

For a Muslim student to feign horror because the Qur'an isn't on the wall of Virgil Goode's office is also ludicrous. The United States may be a secular nation, but its people are historically overwhelmingly Christian. What does the Qur'an have to do with America? Nothing.

by eliminating ALL religious references and icons from the official and unofficial swearing-in ceremonies. No one should ever have to know the religious beliefs-- or lack thereof-- of those taking office. This characteristic of the office-holder should be of no more relevence than his or her bowel functions. The only item an office-holder should be permitted to swear on is the Constitution, but once again religion inserts its odious self into the spotlight, causing nothing but contention. This is what it's best at.

How many really believe that a Muslim student was even in this man's office, let alone asked him a question about why the Koran was not hanging on the wall? The Ten Commandments can be reproduced to some form that can be hung on a wall. The Koran, like the Bible, is a book.

The reason Goode can say this with a straight face is because the people he represents are basically uneducated and probably can't spell Koran.

Ol Virgie is a perfect example of who the Repugs are and who
some of us are too. As opposed to standing up for what it measn to BE a Xian, he's caught up in the fact that you have LOOK like your a Xian....just like th Klan does, the Nazis did, and as did many others. The idea is soooo form over substance.

As the article said.... "I thought it was more about WHO you are...." indeed. Virgie couldn't care less. He just needs it to look all right. Sorry puke. He and his ilk make all this sooo hard.

Best Revenge? BE someone you're proud of. Hold up examples of whom you're proud of (I wanna nbe Morris Dees, SPLC)

Whatever happened to "live and let live"? "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"? Clearly that philosophy is out the window. CNN questioned an elderly woman from a Virginia town, who said that she has the King James bible and that's what Rep Ellison should use? For heaven's sake - why?
Unfortunately, the (anti-)Christian Right has taught too many folks that it's OK to jam your prejudices/decisions down others' throats! They are doing the work of the anti-Christ by teaching hate, not love. Not to mention their support for Republican thieves and liars: other activities which are contrary to the teachings of Jesus.

Many are proud of how long their ancestors have been in the US. Reminder: A great number of immigrants before the Revolutionary War were shipped to the colonies because they were criminals!
What kind of "blood" does Mr. Goode have? He's trying to pull the wool over unsuspecting people's eyes. A con man? Or just another hate-mongering Republican?

muslims-training jihadists please make the connection

Why is this a big issue? Muslims actively train jihadists.......here in america as well as abroad. They are trained in geurrilla warfare. Their training includes carbombs, where to acquire bombmaking materials. Pretty much what we define as a terrorist, that's what they are trained to be. Next question, Who are they training to kill? They train to kill infadels. An infadel is anyone who is not a muslim. This includes evolutionists, atheists, christians, jews, gay, straight, it does'nt matter, if you do not convert to islam, you are an infadel. Please research this religeon, as well as jihad, and jihadists in america. They are actively training here, these are NOT people escaping a war torn country. They are coming here and training for our demise. That's why this is such a big issue. We need to be wary of anyone holding a koran. Please research!!!!!

1. theologically no, because his allegiance is to allah, the moon god of arabia, turned monothistic.
2.Scripturally no, because his allegiance is to the five pillars of islam, and the quran.
3.Geographically no, because his allegiance is to mecca in which he turns in prayer five times a day.
4.Socially no, because his allegiance to islam demands he make no friend of christians and jews (Quran 5:51)
5.POLITICALLY no, because he must submit to the mullah, who teaches annihilation of Israel and destruction of America, the great satan.
6.Domestically no, because he is instructed to marry 4 women and beat his wife when she disobeys him (quran 4:34)
7.Religeously no, because no other religeon is accepted by his allah except islam-INTOLERANCE. (quran 2:256)
8.Intellectually no, because he cannot accept the american constitution because it is founded on biblical principles, and he beleives the bible to be corrupt.
9.Philosophically, no, because islam, muhammed, and the quran do not allow freedom of religeon and expression. Democracy and islam cannot co-exist. Every muslim government is dictatorial and autocratic except turkey.
10.Spiritually no, because when we declare, "one nation under god." the christians god is a triune god, while the muslim's is one entity called "allah" who is never a heavenly father, nor is he ever called "love" in the 99 excellent names.
Whether Christian, evolutionist, or atheist, this is islam.
