Democracy has long been derided by some of its most loyal adherents. Churchill said that "Democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others," while Woody Allen said something to the effect that "I believe in completely open and honest Democracy... but also think the American system can work."

Bush's Midas touch has turned Democracy into a sort of fundamentalism -- a stand-in for whatever is in the Bush admin's best interest.

So now that the Iraqi government is grower further and further from the Bush administration, in response to the needs of its actual constituency, it looks like the administration may be looking into changing the regime it installed to change the Saddam regime.

"Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said in an interview with USA TODAY that his government will not force militias to disarm until later this year or early next year, despite escalating violence in Baghdad fueled by death squads and religious warfare."

Al-Maliki, who depends on the support of some of these militias, has a different approach: "Terrorism and militias — especially militias — cannot be dealt with only by using tanks, guns and aircraft."

Nearly 80% of Iraqis believe that US presence fuels the insurgency and 60% support attacks on the troops.

So a reluctance to force militias to disarm at the behest of the U.S. government doesn't appear to be the democratic thing to do.

And lo, in the clip to the upper right, David Brooks seems to hear some interesting buzz from the White House about how to deal with Democracies that don't listen to it...

Lets be clear... a non-independant democracy is not a democracy.

Should the U.S. elections favor the democrats; think he'll consider doing at least a partial government replacement here? I wouldn't be surprised.

If the only way someone can get elected to office in the USA is by being extraordinarily rich and by spending obscene amounts of money on defamatory advertising . Then the electorate live in a totally illusionary state of believing that they are democratic.

...or elemintate it completely putting democratic institutions in its place.

I'm surprized at the question mark used on the title. Who thought we were promoting democracy in Iraq? In fact, we have explicity undermined attempts at peaceful democratic organization amoung the population. Apparently even the left take proffessional liars at their word.

Incedently, REAL popular reforms (i.e., toward a participatory democracy) in this country would go a long way toward solving many of our problems and would also completely eliminate the threat we pose to innocent people aroung the globe (E.g., 70% of the polutation think Viet Nam was "fundementally wrong and immoral, " not a "mistake" or tactical error -- I assume this sentiment generalizes.).

I seem to rmember being taught that it was the American Militiamen who helped found our country. I even think that is one of the reasons we have such a strong right to bear arms. If the NRA guys and the Minutemen are so eager to take matters in their own hands then shouldn't they be the first to support miltias in other countries? It seems like this whole Iraq thing is always turning everything inside out. I doubt very much if Democracy is what Bush really wants over there. He sure isn't for it here at home. The rich rule here. In my area I see dozens upon dozens of negative Republican ads for our sleazy incumbent to every single Democratic ad for the challenger. You have to part of the power elite here to get elected. It must be the same in Iraq. Democracy without parity is not democracy at all. Bush has proven to all of us that Democracy is much more vulnerable to scam and spoof than most of us ever thought.
