"Anchorwoman": Fox's Latest Sexist Attempt At Humor

Posted by Richard Blair at 11:00 AM on August 22, 2007.

Richard Blair: A former WWE spokesmodel being fast-tracked as a news anchorwoman? There's no doubt this show will appeal to Fox News' core demographic.

Lauren Jones: Unless you’re a pro wrestling fan, you’ve probably never heard of her. But, Fox Network is about to bring her into your living room…to practice journamalism (or something like it).

Fox News recently canceled the "1/2 Hour Newshour" show. I never watched it, and apparently, neither did anyone else. The show was designed to be a right wing version of Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show", only without Stewart, and without being, well, funny.

So, I guess Rupert Murdoch had to plug in something else into the mix. Here's the newest endeavor of NewsCorp (Murdoch's empire) on the Fox Network, which debuts tonight:

Is rookie reality program Anchorwoman -- about a blonde seductress who's taught to be an anchor at a Texas station in 30 days -- good, clean programming fun, or a grievous violation of journalistic ethics?

Perhaps both, say newsroom bosses around the country. The show is centered on Lauren Jones, a former actress, WWE Smackdown diva, swimsuit model and Price Is Right "Barker's Beauty," who was fast-tracked onto the air at CBS affiliate KYTX in Tyler-Longview, Texas (DMA No. 111). Anchorwoman premieres Aug. 22 on Fox...

Hey, a former WWE spokesmodel being fast-tracked as a news anchorwoman? Where's the feminist outrage (perhaps I just haven't looked hard enough to find it)?

No doubt, though, that this show will appeal to Fox News' core demographic. She apparently made an appearance on Bill "Falafel" O'Reilly's show last night. No word yet on whether the topic of loofahs in the newsroom was discussed.

UPDATE: "Anchorwoman" canceled after one episode! Details here.

Maybe more relevant today.

Seems like an appropriate choice for reading FOX's content

The corporate media should also replace Wolf Blitzer with Goofy, Katie Couric with Minnie Mouse, Brian Williams with Mickey Mouse, Charles Gibson with Bugs Bunney, Hannity & Colmes with Punch & Judy, and so on - right across the board.

But then, Jon Stewart would be out of a job...

who is tired of putting up with her S&*+. 5 o'clock news is crap news. a talking head is a talking head. a tv news reader is a tv news reader. at some point the CONTENT of the news, the relevance, will be important. don't look for that on most local television. the cheapest broadcasting (pun intended) there is on television is the local news. tv is a medium more for selling stuff than disseminating information anymore. that's why we turn to the internet, listen to others speaking on forums like this. those who want to know will begin looking. just don't expect someone trying to sell you something to care what he says to get you into his shop.

It's not about demeaning women or feminism

It's about demeaning news and journalism. The feminism aspect is just a red herring.

The same with our judicial system--starting with Judge Judy, shuck-n-jive Judge Joe Brown (here come the judge!), Divorce Court, Justice Is Revenge--all of which reduce judicial matters to a sideshow of irrelevant domestic squabbles and goonish dirt-class litigants. Then we have the Gonzales "I don't know nothing" smirk and Fred Thompson, who's either on TV and not running or not.

Politics, the legal system, and journalism are all being reduced to low comedy.

(Real action always takes place in secret, like on the primetime shows.)

Since the first show, the "1/2 Hour Newshour" was on Fox News station, and "Anchorwoman" is on Fox Network, this clearly isn't a replacement or 'plug in'. They are two separate channels.

This is no comment on the actual shows which I am sure are both equally bad, but if you are going to use one thing to lead to another, at least have it make some sense!

So you are all just noticing that the Repugs always put on some "Little Annie Fanny" type to argue their corrupt case? Sex sells to the Neanderthals who make up the Repug base.

I think she is very hot! Go ahead and rain insults on me. You women here detest "hot chicks" simply because you can't compete. How you can't put your fragile egos aside and be objective says a lot about you. No one here has admitted that she is smoking hot and the show is nothing but a parody...a TV SHOW!! Get a grip!

As an x pat I'm always looking for signs of sanity and reason from "the old country" and find none. The only question seems to be, is it terminal"?
