If John Edwards stands any chance of becoming the next president of the US he's going to endure -- with grace -- a boatload of abuse, manipulation, lies, character assassination, dirty campaigning and poking at soft spots.

Each decision speaks volumes about his campaign.

Having hired two smart and witty bloggers, Amanda Marcotte of Pandagon and Melissa McEwan of Shakespeare's Sister (and PEEK), the campaign has signed on two extensively archived critics who've drawn fire immediately.

And Spring follows Winter.

The first issue arose earlier in the week when the National Journal's Danny Glover (no relation) blogged about Marcotte's archives having been erased. It turned out to be just a technical problem -- something he would've known had he actually asked her about it. Glover was forced to issue an addendum which effectively nullified most of his post and he did apologize in the end, to his credit.

Now the Jew-hating Republican partisan president of the Catholic League, William Donahue, has a problem with the two bloggers working for a Democrat. Donahue is an unabashed partisan who told Kerry-voting Catholics that they were "cooperating with evil." Who gives a flying fuck what he thinks? D'oh! I can't blog for a Democratic presidential candidate without incurring the wrath of Republican pit bulls anymore.... damn.

Silly, right? Somehow the point has yet to be made clearly enough to Democrats so I'll make it here:

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING THAT A DEMOCRAT OR ANYONE WORKING FOR A DEMOCRAT CAN DO TO FORESTALL THE WRATH AND DIRTY TRICKS OF THE REPUBLICAN MOB. DO YOUR THING, DO WHAT'S RIGHT, JUDGE YOURSELF BY THE APPROBATIONS OF YOUR ALLIES AND NOT THE ASSASSINATIONS OF YOUR OPPONENTS.

Edwards should calmly disagree with Donahue, saying that we all have disagreements and the most Godly thing we can do is disagree respectfully. For example, I disagree with Donahue's assessment that: "Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. It's not a secret, okay? And I'm not afraid to say it. ... Hollywood likes anal sex. They like to see the public square without nativity scenes. I like families. I like children. They like abortions."

Not so hard, is it?

It's also worth more than a passing mention that when candidate George W. Bush spoke at the racist and explicitly anti-Catholic Bob Jones University in Feb. 2000, Donahue was somewhat less fiery: "The evidence is in: Bush and his friends find it difficult to condemn the anti-Catholicism that marks Bob Jones University. We need to know why."

Or perhaps we could look at Donahue as apologist for sexual harassment. Like his questioning Mark Foley on whether he wanted to be groped by a Priest when he was 15: "

As for the alleged abuse, it's time to ask some tough questions. First, there is a huge difference between being groped and being raped, so which was it Mr. Foley? Second, why didn't you just smack the clergyman in the face? After all, most 15-year-old teenage boys wouldn't allow themselves to be molested. So why did you?"

Should Mr. Edwards be unable to stand up to William Donahue of the Catholic League he would be an unfit candidate for the rigors of a general election. The true constituency of the Democratic party is the populist, thoughtful, forward thinking netroots, not the Middle Ages thinkers at the Catholic League. Nothing to see here... move along please.

UPDATE: Glenn Greenwald has explored the bloggers of other candidates and lo! they're not immaculately conceived either...

Here is a sad clip I cut from Wikipedia that pretty much sums up how I feel about this guy:
"During his Senate term Edwards co-sponsored 203 bills. He co-sponsored Lieberman's S.J.RES.46, the Iraq War Resolution, and also later voted for it in the full Senate to authorize the use of military force against Iraq. Edwards also supported and voted for the Patriot Act."
This guy is a warmonger. I don't care how often he says these votes were mistakes, the fact of the matter is that most people I know, whether they were parents, college students, or the clerk at the video store knew that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction. Gimme a break, this guy co-sponsored the legislation! He's the phoniest candidate I've seen in a while. I'm not sure what the roots facination with him is...

Evan, you commented: "Each decision speaks volumes about his campaign." Does that mean you think Edwards should speak out on behalf of his bloggers?

I don't think he needs to, just as long as he doesn't apologize for them.

Also, it was great to see Donohue's most outrageous remarks aggregated. The human quote machine is, as I alluded to in the subject line, a breath of stale air.

...especially with Ms Marcotte. It shows what a generous and forgiving guy he is, to look past that "damaged goods" context that she's credited with building around herself with those little spats of irrational hatred and contempt.

My gosh, this is just like when Mr. Trump gave Ms Connor a second chance to show her stuff.

Best of luck to them both...err, all four even, and kudos to Edwards and Trump for teaching us not to give up on people.

Turn the other cheek?

I listened with amazement to an interview with Donahue during which he was questioned about his vitriolic response to any remarks he considered anti-Catholic.
The interviewer asked, "But what about turning the other cheek?" To which, without missing a beat, Donahue answered: "That's a fool's proposition."
'Nuf said.

Edward's voting record should not be forgotten. Like Hillary he had a virtually unblemished record of voting with the Bush Administration. Edward's Dem. nomination acceptance speech was an abomination of sabre rattling. He is doing a better job of blowing with the wind than Hillary but his ambitions are plain and simple Presidency for the sakeof personal agrandisement. The last hope for a democratic process, the blogosphere, should not be allowed to be perverted by the corporatist DNC folks. I am doing my part, here. Someone please post the voting records of Clinton and Edwards.

I don't understand the Jew references, but I can verify one thing. When John Edwards came to LaCrosse to speak on behalf of Cong. Ron Kind, the first words out of his mouth were a benediction in praise of a valuable ally, Israel. This was when they were invading Lebanon. I couldn't help but wonder what it was about us Cheeseheads that he thought we would be impressed by his devotion to Israel when we have virtually no Jews in the area. I am looking for a candidate who puts the interests of the United States above those of Israel. posted by Don McCrery

Salon reports they've been fired

Edwards campaign fires bloggers
The right-wing blogosphere has gotten its scalps -- John Edwards has fired the two controversial bloggers he recently hired to do liberal blogger outreach, Salon has learned.
...
Speculation from sources that the two bloggers might be rehired was bolstered by Jennifer Palmieri, a spokeswoman for the Edwards campaign, who said in an e-mail that she would "caution [Salon] against reporting that they have been fired. We will have something to say later."
...
Leading the charge against Marcotte -- and to a lesser extent McEwan -- have been bloggers like the National Review's Kathryn Jean Lopez and Michelle Malkin. Malkin originally accused Marcotte of trying to scrub Pandagon's archives of material that could be embarrassing to the Edwards campaign. When that proved untrue, Malkin posted a correction, but said that the fact that she had been wrong was "even worse for the Edwards campaign" because "its blogmaster left crackpot posts like that one up and hired her anyway."
...
This report is also listed in Alternet's From the Wire section.

If the wingnuts can push Edwards around so easily, his prospects as a candidate aren't very good.
