Here we go again. Another: Jon Stewart-promotes-apathy-and-cynicism-and-he's-a-potent-gateway-drug-to-not-voting column.

Richard Morin's page A02 sleeper in today's Washington Post centers on a recent study showing that Daily Show viewers are more cynical and have more negative perceptions of candidates than network news watchers. The title grabs the eye: "Jon Stewart: Enemy of Democracy?"

Could it be?

If you're a bleary-eyed writer for a paper with serious subscription woes, perhaps.

Morin's narrative goes like this: Daily Show watchers are more likely than CBS News watchers, according to a study, to have negative perceptions of candidates, less trust in our electoral system, and "more cynical views of the news media." Ergo: Watching the Daily Show is ruining our kids and our Democracy.

Call Brent Bozell and offer Daily Show viewers emergency subscriptions to the WaPo, stat.

But what if Richard Morin can't handle the truth? What if the truth is that it's actually the Truth that's undermining our Democracy and Stewart is only the messenger?

After all, studies show that "Daily Show viewers ages 18 to 29 scored higher than those who consumed any amount of network news, any amount of newspapers, or one to three days of cable news; young Daily Show viewers scored the same as young viewers who watched four or more days of cable news."

That would seem to indicate that being the most knowledgeable about said candidates would lead to cynicism and negativity.

Which would lead a competent columnist -- or an honest one -- to conclude that there's something wrong with the system, not the most accurate source for news on it.

And then there's the PIPA poll showing that those who watch cable and network news had numerous misperceptions about issues surrounding the Iraq War. While newspapers fared better than TV news, nearly half of their readers still believed, incorrectly, that the world was either evenly split or was in favor of going to war with Iraq.

Wanna bet Daily Show viewers knew the answer to that one?

Democrats give more to white people than black, but Republicans give less to both! So they're less racist, but more callous. Or something.

This just shows that nobody bothers to dig below the surface anymore. Someone sees a study showing that Daily Show viewers are cynical or less likely to vote, and immediately jump to the half accurate conclusion that it is the shows fault.

Sure, on the surface this is true. If the jokes made and absurdities pointed out were largely inaccurate this would be the correct conclusion. The fact is however, sadly, that the Daily Show does more to expose the utter rediculousness of the current state of politics and politicians better than any MSM outlet. There is one thing the Daily Show does not do however, and that is provide alternatives and solutions. This naturaly leaves a cynical and disenfranchised audience. They see a broken system and they see no viable alternatives presented.

In my opinion however it is not the Daily Show's job to provide answers. They are a comedy show whose entire purpose is to poke fun at all this idiocy. It is not their calling to be the answer to the problem, for that, we turn to alternative media like Alternet.

The Decider strikes again

In a move to ingratiate himself with the Down with Dubya crowd, "President" George W. Bush has offered Jon Stewart the White House Press Secretary position. Jon is mulling it over but Stephen Colbert has expressed some interest. "President" George has already given Tony Snow his marching orders and will handle the press conferences himself until Stewart makes up his mind. George's final words to Tony Snow were, "You did a heck of a job, Tony."

Doesn't one need to actually live in a Democracy in order to be an enemy of it?

"It was Socrates (an illuminatus) who came up with the idea of Democracy. Personally I am not sure that democracy is the best option for a society. It has always showed to fail, as it requires political involvement from the public, who is the real power. Groups of people have shown to be easily manipulated and controlled throughout history and made to believe they live in a democracy when in fact the real power has covertly changed to the favor of the politicians (or rather those who pull the strings on the politicians). The true definition of democracy is when politicians are elected and employed by the people to achieve the needs and goals of common man. The true meaning of Democracy seems to have been buried and forgotten."

When the political system is totally corrupt, and only an entertainment program dares expose the corruption, it's time to express opposition to the voting scam. Refusing to vote for corruption is a step toward democracy, not an abandonment of democracy.

"All voting is a sort of gaming, like checkers or backgammon, with a slight moral tinge to it, a playing with right and wrong, with moral questions; and betting naturally accompanies it. The character of the voters is not staked. I cast my vote, perchance, as I think right; but I am not vitally concerned that that right should prevail. I am willing to leave it to the majority. Its obligation, therefore, never exceeds that of expediency. Even voting for the right is doing nothing for it. It is only expressing to men feebly your desire that it should prevail. A wise man will not leave the right to the mercy of chance, nor wish it to prevail through the power of the majority." -- H.D. Thoreau

Why would there be a study comparing CBS News to a Comedy show anyway?

It's too easy to point the finger at Stewart for voter apathy.

Stewart's primary audience has grown up witnessing the election charade. They have no guarantee that their vote will be counted or that the vote they cast won't be changed by a programmer at Diebold.

They can only remember Bushes and Clinton in the White House. They learned early that, way too often, media forcefeed the public whatever disinformation government press offices give them without doing the real work of journalism.

Stewart is simply of a reflection of the cynicism that results from a "bought and paid for" political system. He is in no way the cause.

What's wrong? The Daily Show standards for factual reporting are on par with the industry average.

Basic fact: you can learn as much about the actual events that have occured in the US and around the world from watching the Daily Show and the Colbert Report as you can from watching say, one hour of CNN programming. That's because big five media companies more or less pump out the same drivel in fairly coordinated fashion, and the Comedy Central people comment on it, and there you are.

Perhaps viewers of the Daily Show should also be required to watch several hours of Disney Family programming as an antidote. That's the problem with satire, isn't it? Makes the political leaders look like the mean-spirited grasping blathering idiots that they really are? The bad guys on Disney always look like lepers, never like the selfless upstanding politicians that, sob, love us so.

If you want the truth, you have to go looking for it, armed with a healthy dose of cynicism. If you want to sit back and be coddled by warm gooey Disneyland propaganda, where wars never happen and politicians never lie, well - that's your choice as well. If you recognize the problems, but you want to wait for a white knight to ride up and save you, you better realize that your "white knight" is more likely to be a KKK member then your savior.

Jon Stewart has nothing to do with whether or not people vote. Most are just too lazy and indifferent. His audience is informed and likes to laugh. Perhaps the show is not for you. Jon and Stephen combine for the best hour of telvision in years. "Enemy of Democracy" ? Think about it how silly that sounds. Living in a democracy is the reason why he's able to do what he does. That's what allows you to criticize him. Win-Win. Get it? Thanks, ANNA

The traditional "pie in the sky" visions most Americans still seem to be clinging to, is exactly how the country was stolen from us in the first place.

This isn't pessimism, but reality. The facts are clear, but the majority just don't WANT to see.

We see what we want to see. And, if we don't like what we see, we can choose to ignore it. This doesn't always work however, and some become downright unpleasant when confronted with the truth. Their blood pressure goes soaring when confronted by irreverent bastards, such as yours truly. These humourless bastards are A-types in the medical and fruedian sense of the term. They suffer from hypertension owing to excessively puckered sphynctres. If cornered, they are become dangerous homocidal thickers or collectively, even genocidal nutters!

The Daily Show played a clip of Connie Chung's musical goodbye to her Weedends With Maury and Connie show and afterwards Jon mumbled, "And they call me fake."

Seriously. With the Daily Show and the Colbert Report I think Comedy central should consider a 24 Hour Fake News Format.
