Jill Carroll is free...

But according to the neocon press she's Patty Hearst...

I'm tempted to take a dunk in the hyperbole pool and say that Jill Carroll, the Christian Science Monitor reporter kidnapped for three months in Iraq, received better treatment from her captors than from the Neocon Review's John Podhoretz. But I won't.

Carroll, dressed in a Muslim headscarf and robe said on Iraqi TV that she was "treated well" by the Revenge Brigades and that "They never hit me. They never even threatened to hit me."

Podhoretz, according to Judd Legum, wrote:

It’s wonderful that she’s free, but after watching someone who was a hostage for three months say on television she was well-treated because she wasn’t beaten or killed — while being dressed in the garb of a modest Muslim woman rather than the non-Muslim woman she actually is — I expect there will be some Stockholm Syndrome talk in the coming days.

Mr. Podhoretz, she was on Iraqi TV after having been released near an office of the Islamic Party. Could it be that she was respecting someone's culture and not necessarily pulling a Patty Hearst? Or is this just the muddled thinking of a numbskull who can't separate the entire religion of Islam from terrorism from resistance... (ThinkProgress)

I guess he would have been happier if she had allowed herself to be martyred for the cause. What a moron!

Regardless of John Podhoretz's insensitivity, naivete and ignorance, there is photographic proof that she has been treated better than civilians (or civilians) who were taken captive by the United States.

I'm betting that the same John Podheretz who's dissing Jill Carroll for respecting Iraq's "customs" (a severely repressive "custom" not enforced in Iraq until after we "liberated" it) probably insists that immigrants to this country learn English and do a better job of "fitting in."

Hypocritical fascist bastards, every one of `em.

The Hostage Takers killed Ms. Carroll's Translator

Whilst rushing to congratulate the hostage takers for not killing Carroll, some people seem to glissand over the fact that the same group murdered Mr. Allan Enwiyah, Ms Carroll's translator

This comment "respecting someone's culture" how TRUE!

I just wish 'Islamic culture' would have the same respect and tolerance for all other cultures in the world and all non-muslims!

Islam's Human Rights history up until even now, has not been very nice to women and infidels. Not a freedom loving group of people, in my opinion.

Jill Carroll is acutely aware that everything she says can impact the future treatment of hostages taken in this Israeli-American war on Arab-Islam. As this war broadens to Iran and Syria, the neocon agents in Cheney's and Rumsfeld's offices, and those in the media like the Podheretzes whose divided loyalties drain America's human and financial resources to pursue their war of civilizations, have bought allies in the Christian evangelical movement. The neocon agenda unites those who wish to establish Israeli hegemony in the Middle East, looking to the past myth of a God-given Greater Israel with fundamentalist Christians who have a vision of the coming Rapture which they believe will follow the triumph of Zion and the conversion to Christianity of the Jews. In contrast, Jill Carroll and others like her are grounded in reason and realitly, trying honestly to report the unfolding disaster of the Occupation of Iraq and Palestine and trying to understand the humanity of people who have been caricatured in the right-wing media.

Jill Carroll, in the final analysis is naive - her translator killed, sure she is being sensible regards her remarks - her recounting
of her days in captivity, could have an effect on how others will be treated when taken hostage. Even fully armed troops are in mortal danger outside the Green Zone - why should reporters think they will be safe?

What of the story circulating that the demanded release of Iraqi women from custody, was scheduled to occur before Ms. Carroll's abduction, and was postponed by Rumsfeld out of a stubborn refusal to deal with kidnappers, jeoporadizing her life despite being slated to occur before it was cited as a ransom?

Neocons wanted Jill to die

That's right - they (Bush, Cheney, Rummy, etal.) wanted Jill to die at the hands of her kidnappers. They would have gotten so very much press time lamenting the loss of this fine Christian woman, and demanding that their fascist god smite the heathen hords of Bagdad, and expand their gleeful torture of mass innocence, and the sending of our poor boys against their poor men, women and children; and the gain of another trillion of so.

They lost this one and they will try to regain their moral high ground, or their drunk high ground by dissing her. They are so predictable, aren't they? Like spoiled brat rich boys who always get their way. Problem is the war continues until 2009. That means Bush is conspiring to commit murder: not merely 2,300 but 4,600 dead poor young men and women - not rich young men and women; not 4,600 grieving U.S. parents but 9,200 grieving parents; not 19,000 wounded and disabled GIs but 38,000 to 40,000 wounded; not over 100,000 dead Iraqi men, women and baby children but well over 200,000, not over 200,000 wounded and disabled Iraqi men, women and children but 400,000; and most importantly to the World's greatest terrorist Bush - not one trillion dollars but well over two trillion dollars stollen from both the people here and in Iraq.

Glad you're free Jill Carroll, and I wish all Iraqi women were free from imprisonment and torture. Stand tall.

She gets miraculously saved from beheading and yet the only thing the media and/or pundits can focus on is her FASHION SENSE. Good God a-Mighty how lame!

Would they listen to what she says if she wore some hideous fire-engine-red suit-dress with shoulder pads, so common among professional political females? Or perhaps a pair of Condi Rice's stilleto-heeled jackboots? Doubtful.
