Lieberman Twists the Knife Deeper in Democrats' Backs

Posted by ZP Heller, Brave New Films at 12:10 PM on August 4, 2008.

The ideological traitor will speak at the RNC convention.

Joe Lieberman's days in the Democratic caucus are numbered. Yesterday on Meet the Press, Lieberman practically admitted he will speak at the RNC convention, thereby completing his defection to the Republican party that began when he split with Dems to endorse John McCain.  Host Tom Brokaw confronted Lieberman about our Lieberman Must Go petition, with over 51,000 signatures demanding the Steering Committee strip Lieberman of his Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee chairmanship in January 2009.

This wasn't the first time someone from the mainstream press has confronted Lieberman about this petition—the Lieberman Must Go movement to has only gained steam (and signatures) since we delivered the petition in Washington DC in early July.  But to be sure, the Steering Committee will have an icreasingly difficult time ignorning this growing public outcry as more national news outlets call attention to Lieberman's ideological treachery.

Rather than heed the petition as a warning, Lieberman sealed his own fate.  As Faiz Shakir noted over at Think Progress, by speaking at the RNC convention, Lieberman will basically endorse their platforms on everything from the environment to immigration to a woman's right to choose.  How can the Steering Committee overlook Lieberman's hypocritical stances on these issues?  What's more, how can they overlook such a glaring betrayal of the Democratic party?

Of course, the most disturbing part of all is that Lieberman is living under the delusion that he remains somehow above partisan politics.  He self-righteously claims that he will go to the convention and tell Republicans not to act like "partisan mud-slingers" and not to attack Obama.  However, the reality is that Lieberman has been slinging mud at Obama for months on foreign policy issues.  And he plays partisan politics every time he heads out on the campaign trail for John McCain, or every time he embraces Bush-McCain's war in Iraq and their hawkish views on Iran.

Above all, Lieberman's address at the convention ought to send a clear signal to those Democrats who have hesitated in criticizing Lieberman for fear of losing their narrow majority in the Senate.  It's time for more Dems to wake up and see that there's no place for a McCain cheerleader in the Democratic caucus.  And you can help drive that message home by continuing to support the Lieberman Must Go campaign.

Digg!

and he needs to put that (R) behind his name, the sooner, the better.

He won't have his chairmanships when the Congress starts its' new session in January. They better strip him of them, and kick him out of the caucus. Let him go sleep with the Dogs he's been laying with for years now.

He's a traitor, and not just to his party. He's a traitor to this country. Let him go run for a seat on the Knesset. I'm sure the Likud Party would welcome him with open arms.

Lieberman was a large part of why Gore lost his bid for the presidency. His Elmer Fuddish delivery of non-progressive ideology isn't warmly received by Democrats. He marches to the Republican beat and would best be relegated to nothing more important than wardrobe custodian after the Dems increase their Congressional membership next year.

Give them this covert operative, along with the majority of other Posers in the DLC- Neo Cons in Blue.
Of course they are all friends- they are being paid by the same Corps to work both sides of the street- the Corps have a Win/Win deal going between the parties greedy elite. Not only did Cheney Corp steal the election with fraud, they had it in the bag anyway with either Gore or Kerry winning, Both DLC'ers. then add this years Corp Fixed race- with the push for both Mac & Hillary (original member of the DLC.. established 1984- So apprepo
However there are REal Americans still in both houses of Congress, who actually DO HOLD OUR VALUES and Dreams...We must enlist them into this Fight for our Country. This 2nd Revolution to regain our Country "For the People & BY the people"
Fuck Hillary- she reeks like a Corp Whore. The stench prove she has sold her soul too.
During her Reign in the Seante I have come to distrust her, during her campaign I began to Hate and Fear her...Cheney in Drag.Seh cna take her asshole husband with her too- back to where ever they crawled out of... Note I voted for Bill 2x's and WAS an avid defender throughout the '90's- but my Rose colored galsses have been smacked off and smashed with the revelation over the last 18 months.fuck 'em Both- and all THEIR little minions. They have dont to the Dem party what the Neo Cons did to the old School Repusblicans in the '80's- Seized power and handed US to the Inc's like sacrifical lambs!
So kick LIEberman Out- send the Clintons packing and end the infiltration of the Corp Whores on both sides- in a true Bipartisan fashion!

...rather, they're elected to represent their constituencies.

If it burns you that much, move to CT and vote against him. Otherwise, he will be held accountable by his electorate, not by party-uber-alles schmoozers and propagandists.

Thoughtful political discourse in this country has been ruined by the "two-party system". There is no progress, leastways among prAgressives and their right-wing peers. There are only winners and losers, and that great, big beer hat trophy you get to feel like you're wearing if the group your cheerleading for gets to lead us in the exact same direction for four more years.

Witness the Demoboob revolution of 2006, which was supposed to fix the Republicrat mistakes of the previous six years.

Witness the 2008 presidential election...

This clown has gone over the edge of neo-con insanity. He duped the people of Connecticut with his Lieberman for Connecticut Party when he was rejected by the democratic voters of said state. The republican candidate was put aside by the RNC in favor of a much more malleable and loyalist vote in Lieberman. He has fallen in line with the right wing at every turn, terrorizing this country into submission for the benefit of the moneyed interests he so faithfully serves. Is Joe Lieberman deserving of any chairmanship in our party? Absolutely not. I am not a huge party wonk, but I do support a liberal agenda for our country, which Ol'Joe has no use for. He is a "pull yourself up by your bootstraps," "trickle down" republican,a wolf in sheep's clothing if you will, preying on the most volatile and vulnerable in our society. It's sort of difficult to pull yourself up by your bootstraps if you have and can't afford boots. Now he is the featured speaker at the Republican convention, ala Zell Miller, another traitor to the cause of anyone who draws a dwindling weekly pay check. Kick his ass out of the Democratic leadership. Not after the election, now. He is not a democrat and he is of no help in anything other than helping to destroy what is left of America.Enough of the enabling already

So Lieberman has defected. Big deal.

The Dems already have a major traitor running for president. Obama voted FOR Son of FISA. He has become decidedly "centrist?" according to many news analyses.

So what difference does it make in the first place? Join the Green Party of the US if you want to see leadership that sticks to its party platform.

I hate Lieberman as much as the next liberal but don't you think it is a good thing that a Dem is speaking at the RNC? I just wish it was an actual Democrat! What is wrong with a Dem at the RNC? Are liberals becoming so polarized that they are starting to act like Bush in relation to Iran? Ain't gonna talk to 'em!

Wake up! We need more Dems speaking at the RNC not vilify the ones that are.

Fake "My good friend Joe..."

What was more disturbing to me about the Meet The Press show with Lieberman and Chris Dodd (whom I have a great deal of respect for) is the phony collegiality and bonhomie between the two of them. Dodd is smart enough and Connecticut enough to know what a two-faced liar and back-stabber Joe has become, and an embarrassment to Democrats, to pretend a phony senatorial friendship and "my good friend Joe" for appearances sake. I'm waiting for the Democrats to develop some anger at Joe and the Republican smear machine and paint them as what they are: un-American traitors who seem to stand more for "Republican uber alles" than the Constitution.

Hey Democrats, time to grow two large cojones and take the smearers head on, not "My good friend Joe." With friends like these, who needs enemies?

Is he still alive? I thought he died! That's about how much of a difference he makes. The guy's a hack and an attention junkie. Once the Dems saw through him, where could he go that his mere presence would inspire anything but abject boredom? The quickest way to make this dung beetle disappear is to ignore him.

I don't agree with Lieberman and I'm not at all happy with him campaigning for McCain, but he's a person before he's a Democrat, and he has every right to shift his ideology if he wants to. I doubt anyone here would have the same beef with a Democrat who defects to the Green Party. How many Cynthia haters in the house?

Criticize his policies and let go of this middle-schoolish notion of treason. It sounds ridiculous and shouldn't be the main focus of the argument. He's allowed to be free-thinking, it's just unfortunate that he's thinking differently than you. That's the problem.

Your headline is immature. He didn't admit that he's speaking at the convention. Obviously that's a serious possibility, but you should make sure news breaks before you announce it as breaking news, otherwise your lead is misleading. Not that alternet has ever cared about that, however.

Lieberman, the DLC, and the Blue Dogs ought to split from the PDA "Wellstone Democrats." Whether the PDA kick out the DLC or vice versa, I don't much care. But the charade of unity in the Democratic Party needs to be scuttled once and for all. Let the DLC/Blue Dogs form a new centrist party with the few moderate Republicans that are left.

At the same time, the theocrats in the GOP have been jerked around by the plutocrats for years, and they ought to break up the GOP "coalition" as well.

Once the duopoly parties have been shattered, then the "third parties" like the Greens and the Libertarians will have more of a chance at meaningful participation in the American political system.

Who gives a shit who he supports. If you dont like it and you live where you can vote against him being re-elected then do it. As for the rest of you, shut the fuck up. Its politics. If you are so amazed that politicians change their minds to gain a position that benefits themselves, then you are too naive to be bothering yourselves with grown up matters. Leave the big work for us that understand the game being played.

If you are one of the knob-ends that call him a traitor. What are you, 5 years old? 'He wont play the same as the rest of us, wahhh'. Grow up.

What's the big surprise.. Lieberman was first in line to impeach Bill Clinton.. do we see him stand up against the criminal enterprise now occupying the White House or the aiders and abetters in Congress ? People get the government they deserve and the people of Connecticutt keep sending him back. Doesnt say much for them. The mere fact that he still has the ear of so many key Democrats shows how completely gutless they are.. so we have a choice between criminals and cowards (with a few noteworthy heroic exceptions). Time for some new blood.. like in the streets.
