Zombie Republican "Feminists" Must be Stopped

Posted by Don Hazen, AlterNet at 9:16 AM on September 11, 2008.

There is a remarkable guerrilla war going on, where everything that feminism stands for is being turned on its head.

There is a remarkable guerrilla war going on, where everything that feminism stands for is being turned on its head, as the McCain campaign goes for the jugular with massive doses of Orwellian double speak -- framing Obama as a sexist wolf -- and the corporate media reports it as news.

Here is the beginning of today's Washington Post main story by Jonathan Weisman and Peter Slevin for one sickening example:

McCain Camp Hits Obama On More Than One Front

Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign launched a broadside against Sen. Barack Obama yesterday, accusing him of a sexist smear, comparing his campaign to a pack of wolves on the prowl against the GOP vice presidential pick, charging that the Democratic nominee favored sex education for kindergartners, and resurrecting the comments of the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.

Rebecca Traister on Salon gamely tries to stop the flood gates of Palinania, while explaining why she is gobsmacked at the notion of Sarah Palin as fake feminist in chief in the White House:

Suddenly it's Rudy Giuliani and Rick Santorum schooling us about pervasive sexism; Hillary Clinton's 18 million cracks have weakened not only the White House's glass ceiling, but the wall protecting Roe v. Wade; the potential first female vice president in America's 200-year history describes her early career as "your average hockey mom" who "never really set out to be involved in public affairs"; and teen pregnancy is no longer an illustrative example for sex educators and contraception distributors but for those who seek to eliminate sex education and contraception.

In this strange new pro-woman tableau, feminism -- a word that is being used all over the country with regard to Palin's potential power -- means voting for someone who would limit reproductive control, access to healthcare and funding for places like Covenant House Alaska, an organization that helps unwed teen mothers. It means cheering someone who allowed women to be charged for their rape kits while she was mayor of Wasilla, who supports the teaching of creationism alongside evolution, who has inquired locally about the possibility of using her position to ban children's books from the public library, who does not support the teaching of sex education.

But that isn't enough. She and all of us have to to stop being so "thoughtful," wondering how this situation came about, and get the knives out. It is not too late. This is about a future that Margaret Atwood's "Hand Maid's Tale" was written about. She was warning us about now, where black is white, and class resentment is being mobilized again as cultural warfare, but this time with skirts and lipstick. There is a pattern here: if we thought Reagan was bad, wait until Bush I. If we thought Bush I was bad, wait until Bush II and Cheney. Now, with a new Supreme Court in the wings, if we thought Bush II was bad, wait until Palin and McCain. It is a dark future, and McCain isn't remotely running the show. He has become a ventriloquist for far right ideas coming from Rove, Schmidt and Co., and Palin is their dream girl.

Digg!

The Wolves reminded me of Palins Plane Hunting story!!

I was so captured by the beauty and mystic of the Wolves in Mac's latest Ad, the story of Palin KILLING Wolves from a plane came to mind and pissed me off even more!
These were not wolves eating live stock or endangering neighborhoods ( which I feel should be 'transplanted- not killed). These wolves she was Killing were in their own element- not bothering anyone!and instead of being a real hunter, going through the process of actually hunting- she got a plane to fly overhead so she wouldn't have to get cold or wait to long for a Kill shot! She she could have do that kind of 'hunting' in a skirt and pumps! Then only took the forearm as a Trophy!!
FYI Sarah - nature has ways of getting animals fed without you leaving caracassing lying around!Bet she did not even have to get out of the Plane to collect her 'Trophy'!
so thanks for the Visual Reminder of what a cold hearted Bitch this Woman is!

Why are feminists afraid of Palin?

I really don't get all the ambivalence. The difference between real feminism and the sort being gleefully embraced by the right is more than clear. We should be going after her with both barrels rather than wringing our hands. We should be urging Obama and Biden to show the American people that Palin is a sham, a distraction, a mouthpiece for the far-right wackjobs who were holding out on McCain.

I'm a feminist of color and Sarah Palin is diametrically opposed to EVERYTHING feminism is at its core. So what that she's a working mother of five. She is also the ugly face of a party that has done MORE DAMAGE to working-class women and their families for the past EIGHT YEARS. She advocates censorship, and misuse of power, and abstinence-only education (which as we've seen with her daughter Bristol, doesn't work). She believes that the life of a mother is meaningless and that rape victims must PAY FOR their own rape kits. She believes that her "god" advocates a war based on lies and deceptions and that he wants a pipeline in Alaska.

Feminists had better get it in gear and start taking on the Palin machine with everything we have. The time to be nice has long passed.

What's new about Palin?

She's really nothing new...

Sarah Palin = Phyllis Schlafly + pretty (at least at some point in her life... and, apparently, only on the outside)

So they found a prettier mouthpiece for keeping women down. Whatever.

Stop the Palin Obsession

Compare the number of mentions or photos of Palin to those of Obama on Alternet right now. As usual, the left is more comfortable playing defense, attacking, nitpicking issues, and then not offering any reason why we should vote for Obama. Follow Lakoff's advice--minimize Palin. Instead, highlight the hope and vision of an Obama administration. And attack the Republicans as "the party that wrecked America." Palin's unqualified--we get it. Now where's the vision? Please, Alternet--you have a responsibility.

It is ridiculous to think that by exposing Palin as a right-wing warmongering fundamentalist hack, who would bring back the Dark Ages as far as women are concerned, somehow we are hurting feminist causes. Palin and Shlafly (or other Republican trash such as Ann Coulter) are hypocrites who took advantage of the work of much braver women who really fought for women's rights. If it was for Palin Coulter or Schafly, we'd never have gained parity (or whatever passes for parity these days). They now exploit their positions to keep *other* women barefoot and pregnant. As Jon Stewart has wonderfully showed, Republicans told Hillary to shut up and suck up the sexism-real sexism, including that a..hole Matthews claiming that Hillary would have gone nowhere if her husband had not cheated on her. Now the tables are turned, the Republicans are screaming bloody murder whenever Palin is criticized, and the Democrats are treading carefully? Are we out of our fricking mind? I was seriously relieved to see that Obama refused to backtrack or apologize for his 'lipstick on a pig' comment. If we call Palin a pig-which Obama did NOT do-, pigs should be offended, not women. She is a disgusting hypocritical human being, she will do enormous harm to the country (women in particular), and there is nothing sexist in pointing that out. Oh and by the way the Dems had a woman contending for the presidential nomination in 1972. That the Republicans almost 40 years later drag Palin out of her cave (instead of asking someone competent such as Condi Rice) and call this 'historical' is simply pathetic. By the way, I am a woman.

McCain is sure doing an effective job of blunting the whole "audacity" thing by making claims that parallel Obamas and leaving it up to the voters to decide who is lying. The tendency is to believe the person who most resembles yourself.

The feminist backlash is hurting EVERYONE

Case in point, see the post above. Somehow Palin and women in general are to blame for this poor fellow's life :.(

And I'm seeing a lot of this: "you women" and "those feminists". How is this helping anyone?

Guys, when did we women become the scourge of humanity? Given that we only got the vote 80 years ago and some of us are still being put into burkhas?

Palin is a puppet, nothing more. Any assumption that she speaks for millions of woman is a degrading slur. Any good-looking woman can go far if she's willing to kiss enough ass. Real feminists WANT to be judged by their abilities.

Now, I'm not republican. I'm not even american. Unfortunately, the fortunes of our two countries are somewhat lumped together. I would suggest that those wishing to defeat the GOP confine themselves to fact and/or policy. For example, it is in questionable taste to say that Palin was "playing with fire" by having children in her forties. Really? Well, you have just alienated every woman who had a baby in her forties, the majority of which turn out just fine. The stupid economic system is set up so that many women have to wait that long until they can afford to have children. How nice for Palin that she can afford healthcare and daycare for five :.(

And speaking of Handmaid's Tale, I was appalled to read elsewhere here that Palin is involved with homes for pregnant teenagers - where the newborns are handed over to the rich but childless for adoption. The post-apocalyptic future is already upon us, people :.(

Sarah Palin is not qualified to hold the VP position and certainly not the presidency. All the unecessary blather about feminism, lipstick, babies, the moose, her glasses, ought to stop. Stay with a few hard facts. She's too dumb for the job. If she didn't even blink when it was offered to her, then she has no idea what's involved. On the job training is out of the question. Thanks, ANNA

To be honest, I dont think she'll make it to the actual ballot. They're just using her as a "see! we tried to appease you women!" tool and they'll swap her out with someone else.

The Palin anti-feminist agenda is the most important story in the election. Just as we saw how far we could go as a nation to nominate an African-American, rejecting Palin's phony feminism at the polls is an important step for women. Voters shouldn't be deceived: Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh reject real feminists as "feminazis."

Letters to the Editor would help with this problem

So, okay, we know the media will simply regurgitate whatever the McCain camp feeds them, especially if it's about Sarah the Wow Girl. That means "low-information voters" will only be hearing their version of reality.

On something like this, letters to the editor of our local papers can be very helpful. This is a great way to use the women against Sarah Palin blog that has sprung up -- borrow the best points and the best lanuage from it, and write to your local paper, call in on local talk shows -- could one even call the dread Rush Limbaugh? Come on, people -- we're gonna hafta do this one ourselves!
