The Coming Econ-ocalypse: Job Markets Tank

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 9:47 AM on November 20, 2008.

I don't want to alarm anyone, but the job market appears to be in pretty horrendous shape.

I don't want to alarm anyone, but the job market appears to be in pretty horrendous shape.

New claims for unemployment benefits jumped last week to a 16-year high, the Labor Department said Thursday, providing more evidence of a rapidly weakening job market expected to get even worse next year.

The government said new applications for jobless benefits rose to a seasonally adjusted 542,000 from a downwardly revised figure of 515,000 in the previous week. That's much higher than Wall Street economists' expectations of 505,000, according to a survey by Thomson Reuters.

That is also the highest level of claims since July 1992, the department said, when the U.S. economy was coming out of a recession.

The four-week average of claims, which smooths out fluctuations, was even worse: it rose to 506,500, the highest in more than 25 years.

In addition, the number of people continuing to claim unemployment insurance rose sharply for the third straight week to more than 4 million, the highest since December 1982, when the economy was in a painful recession.

How bad is it? The Bush White House is suddenly willing to sign legislation to extend unemployment benefits. A bill to provide unemployment checks for up to 13 additional weeks for those who've exhausted their unemployment insurance has already passed the House, and the Senate is poised to follow suit as early as tonight.

4 million getting unemployment benefits...

but what about those who have exhausted their unemployment, but still haven't found work? Or those who aren't eligible for unemployment (most of the building industry, for instance)?

They never want to give the ACTUAL number of unemployed, but it isn't difficult to imagine the number being more than twice what they state. And then if you add in the people who are only working part-time because they are unable to find full-time work, or those who are under-employed, working a job they are overqualified for, but that will at least allow them to help pay the bills...

We probably easily have 10 million people who fall into these categories.

We've got a serious problem.

THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER ABOUT OUR OIL SUPPLIES HERE IN AMERICA

OBAMA ADMINISTRATION

Oil and Gas has and is today ---- been the driving force in most economies around the world. The BAKKEN Shale in Montana and North Dakota holds all the oil that we presently need to become non-dependant on any others production or reserves.
The pay zone in the Bakken Shale finds is situated between two geologic periods of sedimentation. The zone produced in is the conduit for the trapped oil and gas that is in the Woodford shale. In OK I drilled several wells into the Misner formation through the Woodford shale and the wells in our region of work had yielded enormous amounts of oil and gas that migrated down through the Woodford shale into the Misner [a silty sand] then was pumped out. At that time horizontal drilling was not an option but now is. We need 1500 drilling rigs working in the Bakken Shale now. We need many jobs right now! We need housing right now. We need a proven way to get our rich and powerful back to investing in our America again.

Pull in all US government agencies along with State agencies and inform them to upscale their operations with people and money to approve up to 1500 new drill sites per month for the BAKKEN shale.

Give a one-time 100% tax credit to all individual investors who invest in ----- for domestic use only ---- NEW LAND DRILLING RIGS DIESEL ELECTRIC TOP DRIVE FOR COLD CLIMATE THAT DRILL UP TO 15,000 FEET DEPTH CAPACITY AND ALL THE MANY OTHERS SUPPLIERS AND MANUFACTURES OF THE ITEMS LISTED THAT IS NEEDED IN THE PRODUCTION OF THE BAKKEN SHALE.

Drilling rig manufacturing,
All the many drilling rig components that are needed
In drilling rig manufacturing facilities needed
Drill pipe and other pipe that is needed in oil and gas work
Housing needed in Montana and North Dakota for the oil and gas workers and their families
Cementing and well stimulation service companies
Manufacturing Machinery providers who build the many machines that are needed to make such drilling rig parts and components

Give a one-time 100% tax credit to all individual investors who invest in ----- oil and gas companies that possess drilling rights in the Bakken Shale at this time.

Give a one time $200,000 USA bonus for each SPECIFIC successful well drilled and completed to be distributed equally between all blue collar hourly paid workers in all capacities that worked on the well from start to finish. The USA bonus would attract more men that may have never been attracted to oil and gas before because of the ups and downs associated with that industry.

Unemployment or Freedom ?

Not to minimize the problems of suddenly becoming unemployed. But if this should happen to you, I suggest taking a searching inventory of all your strengths and skills, your hobbies, your secret desires, and instead of searching for the next 'job' (or at least while searching) devote some time to creative thought about how you can use your real self to pull a rabbit out of the hat in the form of a new, self-motivated career outside the dinosaur. Nobody ever said it was easy. But what's the alternative? To continue feeding your life to the Beast, day by day?

unemployment rate is bunk

There are far more people who are 'unemployed' than these figures would suggest. As a previous poster commented, our numbers dont take into account people who've had their hours cut back below living-wage means, people who work from home, contractors & freelancers, and people getting paid under the table.

On a quick survey of friends its gotta be closer to 25%. Even among college-educated people.. those involved in the banks are really taking a hit.

*getting in line at the unemployment office*

This will be the fourth time I've applied for unemployment since I quit my job (because my boss was literally driving me mad) in 2004. I've been working temp off and on since then. I can't even get *close* to a full-time permanent job. I've been lucky that I've gotten long-term temp jobs at a company that pays a good wage. But I'm barred from there for the next six months. :( That seriously sucks.

The good news is, I can get more sleep.
