ForeignPolicy

Not a Gaffe? McCain Campaign Willing to Destroy Relationship with Europe to Conceal Confusion

By Max Bergmann, Huffington Post. Posted September 19, 2008.

Apparently they care so little about governing that they are willing to potentially nuke the U.S.-Spain relationship just to get elected.

Worse than Bush. There can be no doubt about it now.

In McCain's bizarre interview with Spanish Owned Union Radio he refused to say whether he would meet with Spain's Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Listening to the interview repeatedly, it simply seemed that McCain had no idea who Zapatero actually was.

McCain seemed to think he was a Latin American autocrat -- despite the reporter repeatedly saying "I am talking about Spain." This gaffe would seem to have very significant implications. Not knowing who the leader of Spain was or thinking Spain was in Latin America would not really be shocking coming from his running mate, but McCain has run on his foreign policy expertise and such confusion completely undercuts his credibility. Furthermore this gaffe would bring up real questions about his age. Is McCain really prepared to deal with a crisis at 3AM, when he can't even remember who the leader of Spain is during a late evening interview?

But was it a gaffe? While it definitely seemed so, now Randy Sheunemann, McCain's foreign policy adviser is shockingly saying that this is not a gaffe but an intentional expression of policy toward Spain. Instead of just admitting that it was small gaffe late in the day, the McCain campaign has decided that they care so little about governing that they are willing to potentially nuke the U.S.-Spain relationship just to get elected. Sheunemann emailed the Washington Post, saying:

The questioner asked several times about Senator McCain's willingness to meet Zapatero (and id'd him in the question so there is no doubt Senator McCain knew exactly to whom the question referred). Senator McCain refused to commit to a White House meeting with President Zapatero in this interview," he said in an e-mail.

This is beyond extreme. This is beyond reckless. This is insane.

McCain won't meet with a NATO ally, that has nearly 1,000 troops in Afghanistan, that has lost more than 20 soldiers there, has been brutally attacked by Al Qaeda, is incredibly influential in Latin America, has the seventh largest economy in the world, is a DEMOCRACY, and is a large and influential country in the EU. Won't meet with them?

The only plausible explanation for McCain not wanting to meet with Zapatero, is that, like Bush, he is still angry about Spain pulling its troops out of Iraq in 2004. If McCain carries that much of a grudge then how in the world will he rebuild our relationship with Europe, as he has said he would do. In a big foreign policy speech to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council in March, McCain expressed a desire to strengthen the transatlantic relationship.

We cannot build an enduring peace based on freedom by ourselves, and we do not want to.  We have to strengthen our global alliances as the core of a new global compact...The bonds we share with Europe in terms of history, values, and interests are unique.  Americans should welcome the rise of a strong, confident European Union as we continue to support a strong NATO.

McCain even told El Pais, Spain's major newspaper, in April that he would bring Prime Minister Zapatero to the White House. (translation via America Blog)

Republican presidential candidate, John McCain, is ready to change the policy of estrangement with the Spanish government that was put in place for four years now by George Bush. He declared that he was ready to fully normalize bilateral relations and that Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was invited to the White House.

And does McCain not know that his campaign has already met with a representative of Zapatero's office? From the BBC in April:

Recently, Bernardino Leon, who is currently heading the General Secretariat of the Prime Minister's Office to attempt to foster Zapatero's interest in international issues, travelled to Washington to meet the foreign policy advisers to Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and to Republican candidate John McCain. The United States is a madhouse and combined with the fact that it is armed to teeth and has the figurative itchy trigger finger of a psychopath and could possibly elect kooky imbeciles like McCain and Palin as commanders in chief of its doomsday forces does not bode well for the human race. Don't even make me laugh with old jokes about checks and balances...

We've seen it all before: Bill-o, Sean, Tucker, Dennis, Dicksquared, and NOW! It's John McCain doing standup in the theater of the mind. All those other guys think they're funny, Johnny's new at it, plus he's been hanging out with "Cialis With A Pulse", Joe-Mentum. You saw his Beach Boy cover. You've heard about "Straight Talk Express". All things being equal, the two most obvious answers are 1) He's trying to be funny 2) He's running to LOSE.

Yes folks, that`s a reflection of McCain`s foreign policy expertise...don`t know much about anything...but ask him about Israel and that guy won`t shut up!

Not knowing who the leader of Spain was or thinking Spain was in Latin America would not really be shocking coming from his running mate "Cheerleader Sarah", another " winner " who knows absolutely little-to-nothing( except perhaps, after some “intense AIPAC-schooling and the traditional,
yet to be scheduled, trip to Israel” for good measures and then the usual blah, blah crap)

But no real surprise here either, just the next loser in succession who could become this nation next president ....which would make this the proverbial “dumb and dumber” Commander-in-chief,indeed...scary times ahead!

What Is With These People & Their Obsession With "Irrelevancy"?
Posted by: grumble-bum on Sep 19, 2008 4:59 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Do they think that just by saying it, it becomes true? Well, I guess it's a tactic that's worked well for them, so far.

We just heard Condoleeza Rice talk tough about Russia, claiming that by flexing their growing muscle they too now "risk isolation & irrelevancy". Fucking Russia, people! A massive, still more-than-adequately-armed country with a growing economy & a much better position than the US in terms of domestic oil & their potential to import more. Not to mention a recent period of relative, tenuous friendliness with us that is a blip in our overall history of violent gamesmanship. Yeah, they're jerks with a fake democracy, etc. in their own right, but perhaps the best approach would be to not poke the stick down the yellow-jacket hole?

What the hell is wrong with these belligerent children running around speaking for our country on the world stage?

Maybe they hope that if they shout it loudly enough, no one will notice how isolated & irrelevant we have become under their "leadership".

Maybe I should call in to work today... I'm feeling kind of sick to my stomach.

I am receiving many e-mails with stories and links from republican sources with all kinds of sleazy, racists, pro-McCain material and jokes. Urgently needed a good summary, preferably funny and multimedia, showing the real McCain from his military service (wrecking 5 jests and songbird reputation), through his and his wife mafia connections, the Keating 5, to recent flip-flops and errors. Please post any good links!!

This latest Mental Lapse is proof positive McCain must be Discharged from Duty. Spain, Bolivia- whats the Difference....Are you smarter than a 5th Grader? Apparently Not.
It is not MAc age it is his mentla and physical abilities to perform the Task demanded by this Postion- what is asked and expected from any employee.
His Choice of this inexpereinced, Ignorant running mate is also Proof that Mac has no concept of putting Country First when it conflicts with his Ambitons.
This Person has no expereince not only in World Affairs, she has no concept of Industrialization. Her experience with other races and Cultures are limited to Whites and indiginous Alaskans- which she readily crewed every chance she got!
As for Mac record..Let's start with his inauguration into Corp's Organized Crime Syndicate in th e'80's with th e Keating 5- how is it every Dem involved was punished or exiled from Office and yet Mac not only walked away scott free, but retained is Senatorial Seat and is now able to run For President!
Again I ask Mac and His Puppet masters- Which country exactly are you Putting First? Certianly Not US!
mac is either a Corp Whore, Senile, a stroke victim, or a Traitor, Non of Which we Need Again in the WH- Nixon, Reagan, HW and W have been all this country can Bare!

Being unaware is not new to McShame, this is just the latest "gaffe"! It might be funny if this were in a movie, but this is the real world! McShame didn't even appear to know who this man was! Let alone where Spain was located, Latin America? - please give me a break! That he has made so many of these "little gaffes" and he won't allow his medical records released, should be a sure sign to the electorate that there is a problem! Could it be dementia, or alzheimers? Not trying to be funny, but it is possible!

The really frightening part would be that he might get into office, become incapacitated and then we would be stuck with a vacuous Cheney-esk personality! Oh, I got tremors after that one!

THere's another aspect to all this that makes it EVEN WORSE...
Posted by: lexicon on Sep 19, 2008 7:21 AM

Clearly, listening to the recording, it is obvious that McCain was "covering", spewing out a boilerplate line. He was covering because he couldn't, in that amount of time, figure out what/who/where the question was about.

But there's another aspect that makes this worse...

Duly noted that the interviewer has a pronounced spanish accent, and she zapped out the name quite quickly, but, MCCAIN SPEAKS SPANISH. Probably not well, but he speaks it.

SO, there's no possibility that there's a simple language/accent problem here either.

THat to me, is the icing on the cake. Also given the fact that it was a BIG to-do in the press when Zapatero was elected, how he was elected as a REPUDIATION of the close relationship his predecessor had with Bush...

So, I guess our friend John "we're gonna CHANGE Washington!" McCain is going to actually carry forward with Bush's foreign policy?

And what is that foreign policy? simply: "We have no idea who we're talking about, but we'll certainly do our best to piss them off and alienate them."

Whose commercial interests?
Posted by: fcvoigt on Sep 19, 2008 8:24 AM

"McCain dismissed interests of French and Russians over invasion, said they were just based on commercial concerns. McCain said that "The French and Russians are putting their "commercial interests above international law, world peace and the political ideals of Western civilization." [Washington Times, 2/14/03]"

Given what everybody knows today (and actually could have known all along - I have been getting information from the US media for more than twenty years) - please tell me again WHICH country was "putting commercial interests above international law, world peace and the political ideals of Western civilization"

Didn't Rummy 'n' co ignore the UN completely and run the commisssion searching for WMD out of Iraq double quick before they could definitively say none of the WMD sold/given to Saddam Hussein by the US remained in any useful or even recognisable shape or form?

What was the US interest if not commercial?

Gaffes? I think not...
Posted by: Knowmad on Sep 19, 2008 9:40 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Here's what I think is going on in the control room of the apparently brainless and ridiculously self-absorbed republican faction:

These primitives are many things - virtually all negative - but unfortunately stupid isn't one of them. Nor are they desperate, which is a common explanation for very strange, seemingly counter-intuitive actions. I believe they know they're going to lose in November; I mean, anyone can figure that out with a little digging beyond the complicit main stream media. It's just obvious.

So what's going on then? Well, think back to high school sports, or even modern professional sports. What happens when one team is so far ahead that the other simply can't win? Usually that's the time to practise tactics and strategies that you wouldn't dare try if winning were possible - it would be far too risky. But if you've no chance then there's nothing to lose because, well, you've already lost. So why not try all the crazy stunts and half-baked ideas that you've always wondered about; the things that you're pretty sure won't work, but you would like to see what happens. Put in the kid with the weird, underhanded jump shot, try letting the center hike the ball to a wide receiver, aim a pitch at the bat to get a strike or have a player pretend to come off the field but actually stand on the sidelines in-bounds, so the other team doesn't cover him (something my late father-in-law did in Canadian professional football. He actually scored a touchdown, and prompted a league rule change).

Trying out apparently stupid tactics 'in the field' is a great way to observe the actual results - which can sometimes be very surprising - and assess their potential, . So they think "Why not do it when we have the chance". It's something that sad goon rove and his minions are well aware of. It's usually how things like mccain, palin (particularly), Spain's unknown leader, fundamentally-strong economy, flip-flopping, continuous blatant lying, sabatoging voting machines, coercing election officials, threatening voters, pressuring police and stealing your future from your children for themselves and on and on come about.

And if you continue to let them do these experiments without severe and immediate response - even though it won't get them a win this time - you're bound to see some of them in used in the next election cycle, when they just might have a chance of winning. So be(a)ware.

Cheers from Canada.

It's becoming more clear each day that John McCain doesn't have a clue what's going on in the world. Although I avoid listening to his speeches, it appears that he comes across as either reading a scripted statement or, if he ad-libs, it's clear that he doesn't really know what he's talking about. I think he was in the latter frame of mind during the Spanish interview. A McCain/Palin administration would be the last straw for the U.S.

The neocons and Spain

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Maybe McCain didn't know what he was talking about. But the cover-up for the gaffe is probably linked to the withdrawal of Spanish troops from Iraq. The neocons have hated and despised Zapatero, and the Spanish electorate, ever since.

In fact they spread lies about Zapatero's election (duly lapped up by the MSM), saying that the Madrid bombings had scared the Spanish into voting against involvement in Iraq. This was so untrue. What really happened was that the PM of the time, Aznar, lied to the Spanish people about the bombings, claiming that they were carried out by the Basque separatist group ETA. Spain is a young democracy, much more familiar with terrorism than the US, and people were incensed that a politician would lie about matters of national security. Had Aznar told the truth, all the polls indicated he would have won - and Spanish troops would have remained in Iraq.

Zapatero is not just left-of-center, he is a product of an electorate which punishes lies. Spain is a shining example of working democracy. That, too, is unforgiveable in neocon eyes.

To be fair I don't believe that the original questioner identified the man as President of Spain and I can understand McCain being confused .
That being said the clarification by the McCain Camp took a bad situation and made it WORSE . We have been annoyed at Spain since they withdrew their troops from Iraq after the Train Bombing in Madrid but to imply that they are an Advisary when they are a member of NATO is BEYOND DUMB

The "vacuus posturing" of Jacques Chirac re: Iraq

Jacques Chirac warned the UK and the US that an invasion of Iraq would be virually certain to set off a vicious civil war. This is what John McCain regards as "vacuus posturing"! What a complete horse's arse!

I think McCain heard the question about Spain's prime minister, but tried to evade it by spouting some more of the potted lines given him by his controller (Randy Scheunemann, the Georgian lobbyist who seems to have encouraged the idiotioc Georgian attack on Russian forces in South Ossetia last month).

Come on, folks!

This is all a plot hatched by Rove and Cheney who only care about protecting the reputation of their puppet GW and his role in history. They put McCain out there to serve as a contrast in wit, intelligence, and speaking ability to GW so as he fades from the scene the memories of how vapid a President he has bin will be overshadowed by the memories of an increasingly insane McCain.

Like Bush and Palin McCain has no idea that Spain is in Europe as proven by his statement. War is geography for Republicans. They don't value eduction if it includes geography, history, economics, sociology, philosophy,... The fact that they claim McPain and Palin are qualified while they attack Obama is more proof. McPain was 4th from the bottom of his class, Palin jumped around from one small community college or another and the Univ of Idaho and admits getting a D in economics. Obama has multiple degrees from places like Columbia (where his emphasis was on International Relations) and Harvard where he was at the head of his class in constitutional law (one of his profs said he was the most brilliant student they taught at Harvard in 30 years.) Yet Republicans come on Alternet and have the nerve to say Palin and McPain are qualified to be in a conversation with Obama or even more incredible: that they belong in government.

Madhouse is the understatement

I saw a middle-aged lady today in a 2007 Lincoln driving down the street with a McCain-Palin sticker in her window and I almost couldn't believe it. Why and How can anyone support these two to represent US, the AVERAGE AMERICAN.

The answer is clear, as you stated, this is a madhouse. The only reason we haven't been attacked is the fact that we are always making it clear how eager and ready we are to do the attacking.

The fact that we are the only country to drop nukes, and the fact that we still have tens of thousands of them (not to mention enough nerve gas agents to kill every living thing on earth, including bacteria) scares the shit out of everyone so they simply humor us to avoid feeling the scorpion's sting.

Now, if McCain get's elected, all I can say is that I am ashamed of this country. I am ashamed that we think someone that clearly has no clue what he is talking about is the better choice of the two candidates, then not only are we a country of madmen, but one of ignorant fools as well.
